I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the regs are for wearing a ship belt with ncd's if NOT posted to a sea going unit..eg. an airforce base??

I think you're safe, I have two friends in Ottawa that still have their last ship's crest on their belt. Now ballcaps with a ships name on it may be pushing it. It never hurts to clarify it with your chain of command.

I was recently approached about it, but there doesn't seem to be a reference anywhere that says if you can wear it or not.

I don't know of any specific regs concerning the belt except it has to be the black nylon. I've worn my ships belt buckle and only the Army had an issue with it because they don't understand (for the most part) Navy uniforms. The ball cap is out. You are allowed to wear ball caps with NCDs but only if they are your current unit.

Yes, the only reference I have been able to find is that it must be black nylon...hmmmm.  I have had this one for years, I would really like to find a ref stating whether or not I can wear it before I remove it.

Contact the assistant Base Chief at CFB Halifax. He is the dress guru. He would know of any regulations in this regard.

Years ago, they did actually publish guidelines with respect to belts.  It came out as a message and was at a time when the issued belt was actually black leather.  The rules then were that nylon/cotton web belts were OK. but the buckles should either be plain of from Canadian units with which you had served, preferably the current one.  The biga$$ American buckles that you got from American sailors by plying them with rum, were considered bad form - didn't stop the submariners from wearing "boomer*" buckles though.

At CFSAL in the 90s they tried to insist on plain or Log buckles, but tolerated Canadian unit buckles.  I have never worn a Log buckle.  I have a collection of ship and other naval unit buckles (all units with which I have served) that I rotate through.

Issued black leather? Pusser, you're showing your age ...

When I joined, we all wore green and drove steamers.  A blue uniform was sheer fantasy that we never believed would come true.  Christ was a killick and Ivan was the only enemy.  My CD is a Cold War campaign medal.

I wear a plain black leather belt and I know a few guys who do as well. Never was picked up for it.

Hey hey hey!  Not all of us.  Some of us got to drive 280's, complete with bunny funnels, Limbo and a 5"54.  ;D

And to keep it on topic, as was stated earlier, the CFB Halifax Base CPO is the dress authority for the Navy, or at least the east coast Navy anyways.  If it's a policy, he'll know about it.
