A rather bizzare offshoot of the AVRO "Aircar"; this was an attempt to harness the power of the radical AVRO Radial Flow Gas Turbine to a high speed aircraft.
The odd shape is dictated by the huge compressor disc, and the scallops on the sides are the exhaust ports. The designers were on some pretty powerful meds believing a pilot would be able to land the plane in a "tail sitter" configuration, which only goes to show that Canadians are able to compete with the best in strange and impractical designs:
