barrack rules on bases

i have not lived in barracks any where but Base Toronto. it was a mass relax base.  Former Airforce base and then an Army Base.

so here is my  question for those who live barracks on various posts around Canada.

did or do your barracks have beer vending machines like the JR ranks base at Toronto had?

I remember coming back for a parade with the home unit and finding out guys who lived on Base Petawawa were busted for having beer in their room and had to do extras.  i laughed when i heard they were busted i thought it was funny, i thought all bases had them.

beer vending machines were like pop machines, but had cold cans of beer in them. the barraks I was had the machine in the common room across from my  room.  beer was like $1.75 a can,or 2 bucks ( i cannot remember not a beer drinker )  the other vending machine  i remember that  sold beer was in the JR  ranks club, incase bar was closed, the bar was not always open due to lack of  clients some nights.  pizza deliivery guys use to hit the machine hard on stat holidays and late nights for beer. the odd morning you would hear beer cans falling for a quick hangover cure. or breakfast of champs,.

i had a well stocked bar in my  room, always a few bottles in the cupboard  but never out in the open.
they  use to borrow a bowling ball or two from base bowling alley and bowl for beers in the hallways during some parties in barracks.
base toronto JR  racks barrack parties were always lound, fun and no one got hurt , got a few extras or called up in front of the HQ RSM on A Monday  Morning to explain things but never any thing serious

so what  are the rules for drinking in the shacks on other bases? unit barracks? base rules?
allowed ? not allowed?

just curious to see the different rules for a Combat arms base compared to base Toronto now that it is gone.
thanks in advance

There are no beer vending machines that I have seen.   Drinking in the shacks depends.

bast toronto was very relaxed and very casual. never stood a by the bed inspection.  the LFCA HQ had one but i was on leave so I missed it, the RSM, CO of the admin Unit were curious to see what  their soldiers were living in.

Base Toronto also hada  few live in girlfriends on my  floor.  it was not like any army  barracks i thought i would be living in if they were like the movies. lol so would like to know more about a normal barrack life

Up until about 6 month's ago I lived in the shack's in good ole' shilo and it sucked ass. Not like The Kapyong Barrack's in the Peg where we pretty much policed ourselves. In shilo brand new private's had a building all to themselves and they constantly screwed it up for everyone and to this day still do. Then to make matter's worse, just before I moved into the Q's the troops (who just packed up and moved to shilo recently) had to move again for a stupid comms reserve course. What happened, was that tuesday evening not good enough? So as you can see living in is only good when your in a certain place and when certain people don't screw it up for everyone!
>:D >:D

In Petawawa, beer and other alcoholic beverages are allowed in the shacks, but there are no beer vending machines in the shacks or Jr Ranks Mess.

Last when i was in gagetown there were no beer vending machines, but drinking was allowed (i was staff at the time) or we just drank there anyways  ;).

I remember being on a "stupid comms reserve course" that was in the bottom floor of L101 last summer. They moved all our stuff out while we were on a 5-day field ex, so that the PPCLI could move in.

I also remember some of PPCLI guys who just moved in going around...flooding the floor...destroying every piece of furniture on the floor, stabbing a "stupid comm reserve course" kid in the arm with a bayonet, and pouring laundry detergent down the throat of anothers...

Ya...life in the shacks is what you make it to be.....   ;)

I lived in the same barracks before you guys moved in... in a broom closet... with not one, not three, not four, but five basic training courses going on around me at the same time... being woken up to the sound of whistles, banging garbage cans and surly master-corprals at 04:00 when you don't have to be up till 5:30 and you're trying to sleep off a night of drinking till then sucks... somtimes we have to live in "poopy" (Not my choice of words, write it off to the censor) situations... all part of the job.

I hope your joking.  Those are strong statements none of which I have ever heard of.  That's not to say they didn't happen however.

Not really...Actions were taken against those who were responsible...I heard club Ed, but don't know for sure...I know one of the kids was jabbed in the arm with a bayonet, and told he'd regret it if he spoke of it. Kid was terrified when he brought it up with the Duty NCO.

I also know some guys got drunk, broke into one kids room, and poured laundry detergent on his face while he slept, and some got down his gullet...

I have heard of these stories too, of course it is not first hand info. so when you get home I will share names and details with you.

I'm not saying it was everyone....Some of us hung out with some PPCLI guys while we were there, It was, as afore mentioned, some people giving others a bad name. Same thing happens in any shacks..

I always disturbs me when I hear things like this. First; that individuals are stupid enough to carry on with this behaviour after all the noz we went thru with the CAR: and secondly; that the Chain of Command is (albeit allegedly) discouraging victims from coming forward. These are serious accusations and if true, they should have been investigated and if warranted charges laid for assault causing and hazing. I encourage anyone who has been victimized and who feel that they are being ignored by the Chain of Command to report it directly to the Military Police. Serious matters like these will be handled by the NIS. And no , no one was sentenced to the digger.

I live in a Q, but when I lived in F-16 (The RCD shacks) we were allowed to have beer & liquor in the rooms.  The shacks belong to the RSM, so really, it's what he says that goes.  When I first got to the unit, I heard tales of one particular RSM who had forbidden the guys to have females stay in their rooms overnight.  Apparently this was sometime in the nineties - don't know this is true, but I've heard it from enough different people that it was.

Kingston was kind funny about "visitors" after certain hours (2200 if I recall) - I don't weem to recall any of us getting busted, but it was in teh Standing Orders (and I'd have to say, all but universally ignored).  Our mods were also mixed unit and gender - that was kind of novel when I first moved in.  But alas, no beer machines - but the JR's was crawling distance from my mod if I so desired, so not much worry there  ;D.  And alcohol was allowed in the rooms (staff ones anyway).

Holy crap you got to stay in L101! That place is like a Saudi palace compared to old T100. I will never forget the 3-6 fire alarms everynight, 2 toilets shared by 50 guys, chasing rats away at 3:30 in the morning, no a/c, the fire door in our room that could not be closed, giant holes in the wall people used for garbage storage (or beer storage ;)), and the gas leak 2 feet from our bunk!

Yes, Shilo certainly is a magical place but as you said life in the shacks is what you make it to be....
