Today is the anniversary of the longest single battle in the Second world war. Over 3500 Merchant over 200 Naval and over 700 submarines along with many thousands of sailors, soldiers, airmen, nurses and civilians were lost during this single battle that lasted from May of 1939 to June 0f 1945.

Too all of the seaman still on patrol, rest easy we have the watch!

So few people know the answer to your question regarding what was the longest sea battle to ever take place.

Except for an 18 month draft to Pacific Command (Prince David & Prince Rupert), my Dad spent the rest of his time on the Atlantic, convoy escorts.  Joined up September 1939, de-mobbed September 1945.  An uncle signed on about the same time, but stayed in until c1960;  corvettes, drafted Haida twice, once to Korea.  Another uncle, Robert 'Bobby' Brown, went down with the Ottawa in 1942.  From the other side of the Atlantic, a cousin went with the Hood, yet another with Ark Royal (in the Med, if I recall rightly).

Holy cow you have quite the Navy background. Your family fought in almost every theatre the Navy was in. Must be some terrific memorabilia in your house. I won't say terrific memories. Can't say I've heard about too many of them come out of the war.
