Battles of the Somme with Martin Middlebrook

Join noted author Martin Middlebrook, for his talk on The Battles Of The Somme at The Military Museums. He will take you back to 1914 to find the origins of the 'Somme-type battle' that the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), including the Canadian divisions, would eventually have to fight somewhere on the Western Front. The majority of his talk will focus on the British Offensive in 1916. He will conclude with the subsequent battles 'on the Somme' in the remaining years of the war.

Inspired by a trip to the Western Front (Verdun, Somme, Arras and Ypres) in 1967, Martin Middlebrook decided to write a book describing the opening day of the battle. More than 500 British and 20 Germans gave information to assist Martin with his research. The First Day On The Somme was taken by the first publisher who saw it, Allen Lane, in 1971. Martin continued to write sixteen more books including the First and Second World Wars and the Falklands War. From 1984 until 2005, he conducted about 100 tours of the battlefields, mainly to the Western Front, but also Gallipoli, Normandy and Arnhem. Now 75 years old, he is still modestly active and enjoys lecturing and discussion with a knowledgeable audience.
