I have the 8300 world blackberry and the damned thing will emit no tones for me. I have the settings to the "loud" ringer profile but it still does nothing and also will not even emit a chirp when I enter the ringer menu and try to change my settings.

Anyone familiar with this issue and have a possible solution?

It does now! I don't know WTF happened but a battery pull solved the issue, whatever it was.

We'll leave this thread up for others that run into issues

Well you just did what is called a "soft reset".

According to some of the BB forums that is one of only two ways to fix them, the other is to send it back (if still under warranty).

There's an in-between step, which would involve wiping and reloading the BlackBerry OS.  You'd have to get the permission of the service provider (because you'd have to go through Enterprise Activation again), download the Handheld Software package via the BlackBerry.com website, and then use the USB cable and a PC to perform a backup/wipe/reload.

Yeah, the Curve I had went for a swim last weekend necessitating this purchase. And the only reason I went away from the Curve (which I had no issues with, ever) was to gain the international calling ability. I was thrilled to learn that I could download all of the latest software for it as I was kind of attached to the Curve's, five minutes later and my 8300 is the same!

Yes, BlackBerrys are not terribly fond of water.  ;D

If you ever do get one wet, remove the battery right away.  Let it dry out over an air vent or something similar for at least a couple of days.  Then you can try putting the battery back in and hope for the best.  It's not the water that does the actual damage, it's the water shorting things out with power applied that does it.  If you can get the battery off before any damage is done, you can usually revive them after they thoroughly dry out.  A tip for future reference.....

Great advice Occam, I had to tell a few customers this tidbit after enounters with the toilet, sink, washer, puddle, etc...  as long as you take the battery out right away and don't try to turn it on you're normally fine.

Lil_T, did/do you work for RIM or one of the telcos?

I did corporate sales for Aliant.  People who don't pay for their device aren't normally very careful with it in my experience.
