My son has applied to join the navy reserves as of this last April and is going through the application process. All thats left is the security/background checks and medical (plus enrolment).

The recruiter at the reserve unit said he will most likely miss out on this summers BMQ mod 1 and 2 (due to timing) and that he will most likely do his BMQ full time this fall in Saint Jean. Everything we've read online says this is unlikely for navy reserve members.

Does anyone know if doing BMQ full time in Saint Jean is possible for naval reserve members?

Thanks.

FYI, I talked with an individual working on HMCS Regina today (Fleet week tour) who is a naval reserve member who did his BMQ at Saint Jean. I guess its not that unusual after all.

NAVRES typically does BMQ/BMOQ at Camp Vimy in Valcartier. That being said, there is always the possibility of a member getting a spot on a RegF course if they're available, there is space on the course, and NPTG approves.

Has anyone here actually seen Naval Reserve recruits sent to Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School for full-time BMQ, or is that mainly for Regular Force?

Just wondering if the recruiter might mean a special case or if plans sometimes change depending on timing and course availability.

Yes, it is possible, but it’s not the normal path for Naval Reserve members.

Typically, Naval Reserve recruits complete Reserve BMQ in modules (often weekends plus a short full-time summer phase), frequently at their unit or at a training centre such as Valcartier rather than at Saint-Jean.

However, occasionally reservists are placed on a Regular Force BMQ course at Saint-Jean if there is space and approval from the training authorities. So while uncommon, it can happen depending on timing and available spots.

In short: it’s not the standard route, but the recruiter’s explanation is realistic if a seat opens on a full-time course.
