I noticed the capbade the colonel was wearing, and have never seen one like it. Does anyone know what it means, the history, or any other intresting information? Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the double post, the computer FUBAR‘ed. Would a moderator be so kind as to delete it? Sorry.

It‘s the vice-regal lion, and its the hatbadge issued to Army full-Colonels only. I‘m not sure off the top of my head why, but the Director of History and Heritage (DHH) website may explain it.

I do know that Colonels in the British Army wear the same one as well, minus the leaf (of course)

The vice-regal lion also makes an appearance in the CinC Unit Citation (minus the crown)

Oh, does anyone know if the Aussies and Kiwis do the same thing (I‘m looking at you, Wes Allen. ;) )

It is a traditional badge 'Staff Officer's' badge going back to pre-world war one. In the days when Brigadiers were not considered to be 'Generals' they wore the same badge. It is worn today by Colonels who are not on the staff of a regiment. This means that most Colonels wear it but Colonels of Artillery, Honourary Colonels, Chaplains, Doctors and others, who are still on the strength of a regiment or corps, may continue to wear thier distinctive badge.
