In Australia, Muslim women who are uncomfortable with wearing revealing
swimsuits can now hit the beach with what's called the burkini. The burkini is a
swimsuit from the Victorian age, but with minor alterations so that Muslim women can swim in public.

So, no reasons now to close public pools so Muslim women can bathe :) ...

Clearly I am now approaching the point where I can sit back, sigh deeply and say "now I have truly seen everything....."

Well... aside from it looking like something off startrek, umm... i have to say that it looks like it might be a bit... alright i have to say it... this is a bit BS. Cmon when it comes to the concept of modest atire. Wouldnt it be better to just use a one piece swimsuit. Maybe even a wet suit. WTF seriously. THis is silly. Maybe me and my liberal world views stand starkly opposite the super ultra old school conservative ideology, but I would seriously feel awquard seeing someone bathing in this, VS a propper swimsuit. How can you enjoy the water in something like this. Arg.

It really really really feels to me like some guy said to his wife, i dont like the way other men look at you, i am jealous, please wear this black blanket so that no one covets you. '; I know i know its black and its 40 degrees outside and that you will probbably die of heat stroke, so ... hey dont even go outside. That works too';

I just have to shake my head and avoid sobbing due to a severe lack of appreciation for the 3000 year old corruption of a religion.

Feel free to wear it , but im gonna be pretty upset at your imam for telling you to do so.

Please feel free to flame me, but this is my opinion.

Have you seen how expensive wetsuits are?  My 19-Tsunami for my tri-swims was a fair bit.  At $190 AUD, the Burkini's a deal!

And I am sure you would look terrific in it!!!  ;D

oh yeah wetsuits are expensive, but this is kinda...well... nothing like one...lol

I wonder how many people would drown in something like this. I could see it being a bit restricting when wet... sort of like a huge tshirt or something. Might be heavy in the water

Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?

While people give the Roman Catholic Church a hard time for sticking to their guns on unpopular religious doctrine issues, Imams get to dabble in bathing suits.

Thank Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit I'm a damn Anglican!

In an age where we are finally throwing off the old victorian values, sometimes too quickly/radically, some things/people/groups seem to want to drag us back to "the good old days".

Just to provide a small counter point, all I've seen with the samples of the burkini is an article of clothing that would protect against UV exposure in Oz (which my understanding is quite a threat) with a minor utility of providing a modest dress for female Muslim swimmers.  So if the original article had posted the picture below instead of one of a female Muslim, then I would suspect the conversation would have taken on a more tree hugger/environmentalist flavour than a religious/Victorian flavour.  (the site where this pic originated is: http://www.coolibar.com/sunprotectiveswimwear.html ).  I would also suspect as one poster has queried that the material of the "burkini" is along the same lines as the ones in the picture.

Personally, I'm into wearing UVA and UVB protective clothing as skin cancer is presenting high incidence and prevalence in countries where skin exposure is also high.  I would also suspect that along with the burkini on the beaches of Oz, that quite a few "european/Catholic/Anglican/whatever are also wearing similar outfits (albeit for different reasons and motives) as the burkini wearers.

9D, quite true.  You see lots of that UV400 material in lightweight shirts/wraps/etc...  My sister lived in Sydney for several years and she said the beach was almost half and half, for people roasting to a crispy brown and those wearing some type of protective clothing.

This is nothing new.  In my travels through certain undisclosed mid-eastern locations, these were quite common.  Some of the locals would wear western style bathing suits to go swimming, and some would wear these.  What was mind boggling was to see a local wearing one of these sitting right next to a European or North American who was wearing a couple of postage stamps, and neither one looking as though they thought their attire was out of place!
