C-7 A2 at CFLRS

Hello Everyone,

Just a quick question for anyone at CFLRS;

According to their website (www.cflrs.dnd.ca), CFLRS is now using the C7 A2, along with a bunch of other new equipment.  If you check under the news section, you will see a link for new equipment.  Are they actually using the C7 A2 at CFLRS now?

        I was at CFLRS this summer. They're planning to change everything and make it more "tactical", but it's referred to as the Commandant's "vision" (in a reverent way) and it seems to be moving somewhat more slowly than might be desired. They still use old C7's, mine had about as much blueing as a new C7 would have if you cleaned it with steel wool. It's probably on their wish list to get the A2, because they also want to make the PWT1 a must-pass, for which they need the optical sights (though if you can't pass with iron sights, I recommend that you reconsider your career plan). Also, given the incompetence of most recruits and cadets, they'd manage to break the optical sights (somehow). So basically, don't get excited, and you should best be thankful, A1's have fewer little cracks to clean.

I sure hope they don't get A2's.  I was glad they didn't have the C7A1 with scope when I got there.  My section commander told me that we had to learn to fire with iron sights before we got the scopes.  It made perfect sense to me.  I honestly don't understand how it's possible to fail that test.  I couldn't believe how badly some of my peers were shooting.  Some of them completely missed the target while in prone.  There is no justifiable reason to need 2x sights from 100 meters.

Well actually I saw one of those last summer at CFLRS...with the chrome...

C7A1's would be a bad idea at CFLRS, nevermind any A2's in the system.

With all the knocking around that occurs in the Mega - I imagine a few costly sights would be damaged and leaking radioactive gas all over...  Hmmm, glow in the dark OCdts and Pte(R)'s.

Shooting the iron sights is by far easier than the C79.   

We all shot PWT-1, what's this talk about trying to institute it now?

Piper, who said I was patting myself on the back...even though I did shoot a perfect score.  Whether shooting with iron sights or a scope...100 meters is a stone throw...it does not take alot of practice to get a decent grouping let alone pass that test.  My score was not reflected on luck either.  I've always been good at shooting and would have been disappointed if I did any less than perfect on the weapons test.  It is not hard.

1) Infantry Officer training in Gagetown is conducted, complete, with the C7A1 w/ C79 optical sight. If it's good enough for that, it's good enough for St. Jean.

2) For the amount of shooting done at CFLRS (famil shoot live, plus about 3 magazines of blanks, when I was there 2 1/2 years ago), what the hell do you need the C79 sight for?

3) The old rifle is much easier for doing drill, ie. without the collapsible butt. Kind of important for new troops just learning drill.

4) The sight is just another piece of kit that new troops/officer candidates will lose. So why bother giving it to them at that point, when their grip on kit is so precarious that they sometimes forget they have to pick up their restricted weapon whenever they move from point A to point B?
