Hi, I‘m currently in Cadets in Winnipeg and I‘m 15. The day I turn 16 I want to go out and get an application to join the reserves, but can I stay in cadets while in the resrves or do I have to quit cadets?

yah you can, but why? Making money, to not making money. You will be picked on, Becuase they will think your better then them, and will put you on the spot.

Also If you get into trouble in cadets,It might effect your reserve life, It‘s not worth it

Why not get an application now? Then have it all filled out and as soon as you turn 16 pass it in to the CFRC.

Chances are once you get into the reserves you won‘t even want to stay in cadets anymore, you might not even have the time!

I did both at the SAME time with no problems back in the ‘80s. Times were better then, more exercises, training etc. I balanced both pretty well.

Besides, what you learn in the reserves you can bring some of it back to your corps an enhance the training there, unless you are in a position not to do so at your corps.

It‘s your decision, think before you leap

Regards

If you have the time its up to you, I have thought of spending time with my local cadet core myself. Just remember the one problem you might have is that you have to commit to reserves and your priority is there.

Wow, lots of answers so fast, I love this site! I realize that some people may make fun of me, but hey I‘m a likeable guy I‘ll make them like me:P Besides I‘m actually in Air Cadets not Army Cadets and the reason I wanna stay in Cadets is so I can get my pilot license for free. But when I join the Reg. Forces I‘m joining the Army since they don‘t seem to want me and my crapy eyesight to be a pilot.

There is nothing stopping you from being in both, but as was previously mentioned, you get into conflicts and reserves takes priority. I have heard that it is up to the cadet CO to say whether or not they think that you can accept the responsibility of both.

Also, on things like ex‘s etc, because you ARE a reservist, you also get to be held accountable to the CF and its policies.

oh, and just a note for future: yes are are/were a cadet but while on course etc, you were not.... you can admit it later on in your career, but while on course, including Basic MQ if you do- you will be on the short end of the stick so to speak - it won‘t be fun.

I know this is off topic but do you know Tom Naaykens? I went to ITLC at Penhold with him and I‘m pretty sure he‘s from 6 RCACS

I did the Air Cadet/ Reserve thing in 2000. It was fine until I had to choose between Reserve summer training and a flying scholarship. Obviously I chose the flying. I had to leave res for it, but now I‘m back, and this summer im going on bmq/sq and I cant wait.

yes I knew Naaykens.... he quit like last yr...
which was too bad though

who would ever choose a cadet course over an army course?? I know im going to SQ this summer, even if it means giving up exchange or staff

I‘m not in cadets, but I would have done what BadBird did, and taken the pilot‘s course over the army course.

A private pilot‘s licence is a lot of work to get in civvy street, and the hours you get, if I am not mistaken, count towards a commercial licence if that‘s your choosing.

You can make a heckuvalot more money pushing an airplane around than you can hauling a ruck and pushing dirt around.

Res army is "fun" but career comes first, unless you choose to go reg force, and then your priorities should change.
