CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Travellers avoiding the US is a global thing and not a uniquely Canadian thing. That includes both business and leisure travel. US hospitality industry will definitely feel it.

CBPs fun and games at the border is definitely having an impact.

Apparently a very senior PS member had their work IT items cloned and searched at a crossing not so long ago.

Tourism industry in the US is not going to have a very good time this summer.

Point Roberts is already dying...

At least to get to Hyder, there are no CPB or ICE agents to hassle you. But then you’re stuck there till you turn around and drive back to BC. But then you get hassled by CBSA.

White House seems pleased with the way the meeting went. Do they normally make video montages?

I can’t believe I’m saying this but, but maybe, just maybe the WH is taking some baby steps to repair the relationship?

I think they really want a few foreign policy wins. So far they have not been very successfully. We are low hanging fruit. Easy win for them showing they can in fact play nice.

Or... the media/political hyper dramatization over everything was not accurate. I know that doesn't fit the narrative of the evil WH occupant being heroically confronted by the suddenly nationalist elbows up crew.

No, there was no over dramatization over anything - the WH was confronted by a professional, who the WH knows has the vast majority of his people united behind him, who acted in a professional manner and didn't rise to any of the 'click bate' that they put in front of him.
As a result, they had 2 choices - do/say nothing and get nothing out of the meeting to display to their own people, or, pivot and put on the charm offensive and say, 'look at us, we are playing nice!' and remove an argument from the dissenting Republicans that the WH is ruining its relationship with this largest trading partner and closest ally.

Nobody's signed anything yet.
Yet that word has become this administration's byword.
That and the phrase has anyone seen the President's latest tweets yet ?

US confirms major trade deal with the UK. Seems like the US has been playing nice with others.

Trump is, characteristically, rather overstating the scope and significance of the deal, as well as how complete it actually is.

Did you read it compared to what it was prior to the meeting?

Major trade deal?
I haven't read it but it seems vehicle imports are significant component. I'm not sure I'd it call that a 'major' import sector. According to one source, the UK exported a little over 100K vehicles to the US last year (I'll bet a lot of them are Minis).
