I don’t think there is “lots” of room at 17 Wing. The flight line could be optimized and redeveloped, but the footprint is not all that large.

I am not sure there are easy bolt ons in an AEW aircraft. The GlobalEye is already pretty space and weight constrained by the Global 6500 airframe (relative to the E7 Wedgetail).
EMI/EMC testing can’t be simple, either.
Actually the roads are being designed by a dedicated team in City Hall whose sole purpose is to so frustrate drivers as to force them onto our world class transit "system."

There's traffic in Ottawa too, if you've ever been there at rush hour. In Toronto there is traffic because of the volume of vehicles. in Ottawa, there is traffic because the friggin' road system was designed by a four year old doing doodling in the corner of a piece of paper.

And the Transit System in turn is designed bt a dedicated team whose sole purpose is to so frustrate rider as to force them to purchase and use automobiles on their world class roads.

Isnt the Global Eye already NATO compatible? Doesn't the US operate the Bombardier GE 6000 that already incorporates the US Comms systems so R&D has already been done. Don't kid yourself the GE6500 has already been figured out for these systems long before now. Including aerial refueling probe. The question is how much will Bombardier want to recoup on those costs.
I know someone's going to call me out on things. But if you dig around yourself you will find all the open source material yourself.
It really is funny how the US has been using the GE6000 for a few years now running their aerial Control NODE.
Why Canada has not already built a fleet of Bombardier based Maritime, Land and CC patrol aircraft is silly.
Maybe now moving forward with SAAB we can look forward to having a true partner in business.

Off topic rabbit hole I know (but I didn’t start it). Went downtown yesterday around 4:30 from where I live in Navan to meet someone for drinks. 417 west bound was backed up to the split (east bound for as far as the eye could see). Got off at Nicholas and would normally have turned left on Laurier but already knew there’s no turning left onto Elgin at the moment. So proceeded to turn left onto Mackenzie King Bridge. You know, the one that’s been under construction since before Covid (notwithstanding the sign saying the project started in 2022…). Turned left onto Elgin coming off the bridge only to find Elgin south bound is down to two lanes because of the bike infrastructure improvement project on Laurier. Sat through 3 light cycles at the corners of Elgin and Slater and Elgin and Laurier before I could get across. Earned that drink.
I have a similar story yesterday trying to get my mom to an appointment at the Bruyere Family Health Centre, only coming from the West end of town. Got off the Queensway at Lees, and Lees was backed up past Ottawa U. Took 45 minutes to get the 4 Kms from Lees to Bruyere Street. F@*ing crazy.

Oh brother, I feel your pain.
I drive for OC and you just described every day of my working life. I mean, it’s fantastic that they want to make cycling safer and more appealing, I’m all for that. As near as i can tell they are attempting to make driving downtown so irritating that people will make the decision to bike, walk or take public transit. Somebody overlooked that buses also need viable roads in order to serve the system. Narrowing main roads (Elgin, Queen and Scott I’m looking at you) through a series of overly intrusive bike lanes and traffic calming measures has made it all but impossible to get transit users anywhere in a predominantly or timely manner. There’s very little here that shows a coherent plan from City Management to sort any of it out.
But, I digress, back to the thread topic…sorry mods for the derail.

Apologies for the side trip…
It would be brutal negotiating a bus downtown in this city so you have my sympathies and admiration.
To atone for my sins and bring it, sort of, back to the topic, North Bay might not be that bad if it meant avoiding the traffic chaos of Ottawa, or Toronto. As for Winnipeg, I just spent the long weekend there and while the area to the south and west of the base isn't too bad, we generally stay away from the downtown completely. Not to mention the hassle of having to show ID just to get into a Liquor Mart. There I'm done venting.
More fully on topic, I'm in no position to comment on the relative merits of what's been on offer but I'm sure glad to see us putting more focus on having sovereign capabilities to monitor and control our own airspace and waters. I've never understood why we've not had our own AEW capabilities, especially given all the years were contributing personnel to the NATO and US operations.
