A few years ago, there was a pretty good show called SAS: Are You Tough Enough. Many of you might remember watching it as Ret. Staff Stone stalked about and taught contestants the basics of SAS tactics, battle procedures, basic leadership principles etc. The whole point of the show was for volunteer contestants to earn the nod at the end of the entire serial, from Staff Stone and other DIs, and the knowledge that they were tough enough for the SAS.
The show was informative, it was interesting, it was fast paced and it was real. This was not Survivor or Big Brother or what ever. This was a reality based show based on an elite military unit. The only thing the contestants win at the end was their pride. No prize money, no gifts, nothing. Sure, there's glory, but heck it was hard earned.
My point to all of this. If we had a reality series based on the same concept, we could have a very effective recruiting tool. Obviously, we can't possibly cover all the different trades and jobs within the CF, however, we could do something that all servicemen and women have in common. Basic infantry skills. Those skills that make all of us SOLDIERS first.
So, we take a group of 'contestants' and run them through the same thing as SAS: Are You Tough Enough. We break everything down. One series will be Arctic Warfare then Desert, Urban and Temperate. It'll be a 2 week serial. The first week all the participants will learn basic dress and deportment, rank structure, nav and compas, weapons drills, cam/concealment, small party taskings, so on and so forth.
I know some of you would say that we can't teach all of that to recruits in that short of a time period, how do we expect civis with NO experience to learn this in 1 week?
Well, here's the kicker, the winners of SAS: Are You Tough Enough did just fine, and they learned it in and around the same amount of time. There would be eliminations every 2 days, with volunteer release from the program at any time. Week 2 will see them deployed to the field with the first 3 days honing in their skills, and the last 4 days to put everything together on a mock mission.
I think we can expect some reaction from the general public about this. Hopefully in the good. This will present to all the T.V. watching couch potatoes out there that this is a challenge and it can be fun. Obviously Op Sec will be followed and only doctrine that is publicly accessible will be taught.
If we want to kick it one more notch UP. The winners from all the different serials will be invited to participate in a mini CSOR selection/Assaulter's course. et voila! We satisfy the public with a little taste of Special Forces.
Just an idea. What do you guys think?
