Question, though:  Autumn Kelly had to renounce her Roman Catholicism to enter into the Royal Family.  Should Canada maintain its ties to a Royalty that cannot accept nearly half of Canadians (2001 Census: 43%)?

Do they all want to marry Royalty?

Don't care, I'm fine with the monarchy but anyone who makes entry into the royal family their life goal is suffering from delusion of grandeur.

Given that membership in the Royal Family carries with it the possibility of serving as the head of the Church of England, it seems like a defensible policy even in purely modern terms; a bona fide operational requirement, as it were, let alone historically.

I can't see the issue, since I would imagine the number of people making this their life goal would be rather minuscule.  Besides, judging by the picture in the article, one would have to wear very silly hats.

For that matter, it can't accept ~1 out of 12 Brits, either.

Have to agree with quadrapiper - it's part of the "job" if you want to marry into royalty.

The royal family is far from the only one who requires a son- or daughter-in-law to be of their own religion.  Many families, even today, don't want to deal with the possibility that their child is marrying someone of a different faith or race.

Hilarious question given that I'm shacked up with a French Roman Catholic ...

I don't know what his mother hates worse:

1) The fact that I will never be a Roman Catholic (or any other religon) and thus we will never marry "in the Church"; or

2) That we're shacked up anyway & lovin' it; and

3) That we'll probably never get married irregardless of her thoughts about the situation.

;)
