Social Studies used to be two separate departments: Geography and History with a leavening of political studies in the later grades. These were buttressed by the study of literature and philosophy using historical examples.
This article describes the path from there to here, from the Canada of Expo 67 to which I emigrated to the modern post-national state with no mainstream culture.
