Sergeant Arnold Hagerman was a German mercenary serving in the Brunswick Regiment under Riedesel and was captured with the army commanded by General Burgoyne at Saratoga in October 1777. He escaped and made his way to Niagara where he joined Butler's Rangers. He brought with him a stand of British colours which had been captured by the Americans, and "delivered the colours up to Colonel Butler."

Whether the Colours were taken at Saratoga is not known. Michael Glover, the noted military historian, has stated that other than the 9th Foot, there seems to be no firm evidence that any other British regiments carried colours on the campaign However, the regimental history of the 20th Foot states that just "previously to the surrernder the Colours were burnt" and a King's Colour of the 62nd Foot laid up in Kendal Parish is reputed to have been secreted away and carried back to England.

Also surrendering at Saratoga were the 21st,24th, and 47th Foot.

So -- what colours did Hagerman bring to Niagara?
