In addition to increasing the manning levels of the JTF2 and adding to its integral combat support, transportation and intelligence capability, General Hillier talked about the establishment of an elite battalion to augment the commandos.

This new unit would be based on a light infantry battle group, manned with the fittest and most dedicated soldiers, and would need to be highly mobile in order to serve as a rapid reaction force to global hot spots.

In other words, the Liberal government is planning to re-establish the very same airborne regiment it disbanded in disgrace almost exactly 10 years ago.

When he said "highly mobile in order to serve as a rapid reaction force to global hot spots." does he specifically mean the return of the Airborne Regiment?  Perhaps he wants to create a form of Light Infantry along the lines or the "RANGERS" or perhaps create a Canadian version of the "SEALS".  We may want to go the "AIR CAV" route, with all the new Helicopters being brought into the picture.  Perhaps we will want to entice more "visible Minorities" and new immigrants into the CF to create a Force like what the Brits propose to augment the SAS.  Don't let ST stop your imagination with only the return of the CAR.  There are so many other possibilities.

those are two of the stupidest lines ive ever seen. we couldnt put together a platoon of 'AIR CAV' let alone a real unit, the government cant afford up keep on the choppers we have, do you think they are going to outfit a whole unit with them ?

yes, and the canadian army needs more visible minorities, because there sure arent enough.  unless by visable minorities you mean white people, because thats the way its starting to look.

there will be no new unit, only more broken liberal promises.

Wacked out of what corner do you think the Liberals will come up with aircraft for an Airborne Unit?  With the sorry state of our Herc fleet we need more money spent on Airlift, both fixed wing and rotary.  Both have been brought up in the Budget proposals out of Hillier's office.  Nothing is impossible....just think outside of the Liberal Box.  ;D

Frankly, one could read durn near anything into the statement. It could be a dedicated commando battalion like 4 RAR; it could be a rotational task among the light infantry battalions; it might be something along the line of the new SF unit the Brits are forming, although this seems unlikely; and it could an airborne battalion. And it could be something else, but who knows?
