Discussion at work about borders and security, it was brought up that there is a lucrative trade in smuggled goods between the US and Canada. I did a search and there was an incident with reservists (I think, couldn‘t verify) and mowhawk natives in Ontario over smuggling. It seems the soldiers were beaten and their weapons were taken away in a clash with natives.

Is this true? Where can I find more information? Why were soldiers used instead of police or customs? What was the outcome?

Are you referring to the Oka crisis? If so, that actually started due to a proposed expansion into Native lands that was met with fierce resistance.

Try this:

I know of no incident where Canadian soldiers were disarmed by civilian troublemakers, including Oka.

Actually, a native director has shot a film about the Oka crisis...it‘s interesting because in spite of the way they try to slant it, you can still see what is going on...there‘s an excellent shot of some reporter asking a soldier about matters of public policy, and the response is classic: "I can‘t answer that question, and you **** well know I can‘t". Or another way of putting it, "the Canadian government doesn‘t discuss matters of policy with Junior Captains, and I‘m not about to start a media storm for you..."

Ok question asked and answered. BTW Sherwood why is this posted in Canadian Army Authors?

Oka,the ONLY time you will go to Tim Hortons in an APC.No shoes,no shirt,no service and leave the GPMG outside please!

Old School, so that was your Grizzly I saw in the parking lot of Tims. What the turret made it too high to use the drive through?

Well, the troops were hungry and we seemed to get right to the front of the line.
Having an OP 45m from the "enemy" in the bush made it a no-no for take out though. Indian trackers are famous for sniffing out a boston cream and large dark roast at more than 100m.
The whole event was a big :boring: and needed a little Timmy‘s once in a while. Never did get a medal for doughnut runs in the face of the enemy...I should put in for that though... :warstory:

ahh, memories.

I was in Pet, waiting on Akwesasne.

What unit were you with Old School? Maybe we met?

Cheers-Garry
