Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
Started as an argument between a buddy and I and ended up as a confused debate lol

Are there two types of flight jackets issued to pilots? Ie an intermediate weather flight jacket and a winter weather flight jacket?

I'm talking about the Olive Drab ones most of them are all still wearing with the small circular velcro patch on the left upper arm.

If anyone can answer this and supply an actual name off the tag you may win me a coffee on this lol

Or in general if anyone has any info on the jackets issued to pilots in general it may help me out.

Cheers!

(They aren't just issued to pilots)

The current version that is being issued is a "2 in 1" jacket, part of the ACE (Advanced Crew Ensemble) issue.  It has a waterproof liner, removable hood and zip out quilted liner for cold weather.  Remove the liner and voila, your lightweight flying jacket.  The label calls it a "jacket, flyers, combat, FR".

However, some aircrew still have the "before ACE" issue, which was a separate lightweight/summer OD jacket and cold weather jacket.  I turned the ones I had in for the ACE.

All 3 of them are seen in this picture; kneeling is the ACE issue on the FE, the Plt 2nd from right with the *old* style winter and far right, the Plt with the intermediate/summer one.

ACE is easy to pick out with the black pull tabs, the older winter one has a zipper that goes up on a angle off-centre, and the summer one has knitted cuffs and collar.

The older summer flying jacket  is "Jacket, Flyer's, Int, FR". I haven't worn the winter one in decades as I do not like it, so cannot give you the proper designation from the tag. I have a couple of old US Army woollen shirts with the sleeves and collar trimmed that fit quite nicely under the summer one, and are definitely fire resistent.

Awesome thanks!

So I was half right lol

I guess the new ones are also Olive Drab (the two part with the liner).

Surprised they didn't make them in CADPAT.

I like the OD look better personnaly though, always have.

The ACE gear is supposed to be available in CAG (Cdn Average Green aka OD), CADPAT, Black and Orange if I am not mistaken.

The look of it is *meh* to me, I prefer a jacket that (1) helps me not get crispy if the SHTF (2) keeps me warm and/or dry if I am outside and (3) I don't lose crap out of the pockets.  ;)

I saw a flight only inflatable PDF today at a surplus store today, it was thin ad almost nothing to it, but styled after a typical co2 inflatable vest.

Perhaps a UCLP (Universal Carrier Life Preserver)
Good work.  I've seen "inflatable PERs," but a PDF is a document format -- neither of which has anything to do with flight jackets.

I just left it in the  :stars:  pile
