I work with a guy who was a firefighter in the CF. I as well was in the CF reg force infantry. He tells people the craziest stories about overseas deployments in Somalia and Bosnia. I was never in Somalia but I did tours in Bosnia and Afghanistan. He insists that he was tasked with doing armed escorts in Somalia (Mogadishu) as a firefighter, and that he was involved in numerous fire fights, and not fires but contact with Somalian warlords and militia. It sounds far fetched for a firefighter do be doing anything like that when I know guys that served there with the airborne, who never had contacts as heavy as he claims with RPG, AK, and tanks! Is this guys full of it, is it possible that he was never there?? I am wondering if anyone can shed some light on this, someone who perhaps served as a firefighter around the same time as the Somalia affair. Also I don't appreciate this guy taking anything away from people who did legitimate tours and operations, if he is lying he is giving CF members a bad name. Then again a lot of civies don't know any different.

As far as I know we did not have fire fighters in Somalia. Our first large scale deployment was to Haiti under OP Pivot. We did have firefighters in Bosnia however I don't believe anything that he describes happened. I know we have had people that where over there in other trades prior to re-mustering. I do believe I know about the person you are talking about, he is unfortunately fairly well known in our trade for his stories.

I would never, ever, ever, believe the rest of the trade to be like this one particular person! I respect what firefighters do, especially firefighters in the CF. He said he became a firefighter in the CF in the late 1980's. I was just looking for information to see if there could be any truth to his stories. I knew what he was saying was highly unlikely and disrespectful to anyone that serves!

Maybe he was in Somalia, but on one of the ships - Preserver or Protecteur went there IIRC. Remember, every lie is based in truth...
