My son has gone Cbt Eng instead of Armour, but we will forgive him (eventually)

DP2 grad in Gagetown is in July (command changed grad date by one day, so we had to forfeit about $500 in airfare, etc.) , then he is posted to 1CER in Edmonton (his first choice, FARTHEST from Toronto).

Question:  he is driving out with a friend so how many travel days will they be allowed? i.e. is POMV travel expecation still 500 km/day?
Is it reasonable for him to request leave on route (to visit with Mom!!!)
If so, what is his allowance if he used private vice commercial accn?  Hopefully he will use the money to buy Mom flowers, etc.

What is rate for meals and incidentals for POMV travel to next posting?

Many thanks for answers to original questions above

*****  Now, a followup question:

Son wants to have some stuff (PC, motorcycle stuff, some tools, clothing, etc.) shipped from his current residence to his first permanent posting, which DND will happily do.  He is assuming he will live in quarters for at least a few months.

BUT, it he decides to rent an apartment, etc. in Edmonton will DND cover a second shipment to move his furniture (bed, desk, dresser, etc)  to Edmonton?

Many thanks

Yes. Should work out to roughly 10 days.....(i'm basing that on Greenwood to Comox being 13 days)

Last time i did that it was $50

Yes, 500 km a day is correct.  14 days from Greenwood to Comox, I know I did it.  :)

Yes, $50 a day for non-commercial accommodations, plus meals and incidentals which are $86.35 per day

Yes, he may ask for leave in conjunction with his travel time.  However, while on annual leave he loses financial benefits.  Travel time is meant for travel, not visiting friends and family.

Be careful on this one.  In general terms:

If taking leave en route delays availability for receiving HG&E at destination, you could end up paying cartage fees if your stuff has to go in storage because you're not there when it arrives.  Fortunately, the further your posting is, the greater the chance that your stuff will arrive long before you do (moving trucks often have two drivers and will do 1500 to 2000 km per day vice the 500 km we're given).  In this case, your stuff will have to go into storage anyway and you will not be charged the cartage fee.

Delaying your arrival could also effect entitlement to interim lodgings and meals (does not effect entitlement to lodgings and meals while travelling).  However, as long as you arrive at destination before or on the day that your new home becomes available for occupancy (and can thus receive your HG&E) then there should be no issue with any leave taken en route.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most of us find the allocated driving time generous enough that stopping for an extra day or two en route (particularly on longer distances) without effecting anything is quite feasible.  For example, when I left Victoria, I was able to spend an extra day in Edmonton en route to Ottawa and I still arrived on time with no loss of any benefits.

Having said all this, if the guy in question has no HG&E, there should be no issue whatsoever.
