To be fair, my sister inlaw in Malaysia employs a maid from Indonesia. The maid told me that working in Malaysia for 2 years, means she can then go home and buy a house, as the wage differential between places like Malaysia and Indonesia are significant. I can't speak for HK, but Malaysia does try to protect domestic helpers. (Imported construction workers not so much).
