CHURCHILL NOW A NON-SMOKER?

Los Angeles, June 16, 2010 – Revisionist history is upon us, as a giant poster of Winston Churchill outside a London museum pictures Britain’s World War II leader without his trademark cigar thanks to some careful airbrushing.

The incredible revision of a 1948 photograph of Churchill in which he was sporting a large cigar was revised to eliminate it and simply leave his mouth open. It’s part of a five-poster set that hangs outside the Britain at War Museum in London.

He said: ‘I pointed out this crude alteration to a museum steward who said she hadn’t noticed the change before, not had anyone else pointed it out.

‘Viewing the now disfigured image reveals just how unhinged the vociferous anti-smoking lobby has become. So much for the notion that only communist tyrants airbrushed history.’

The museum owner and manager said the change wasn’t their doing and that they would not have supported such a change. “We've got all sorts of images in the museum, some with cigars and some without,” said Museum manager Josh Welsh. “We've even got war-time adverts for cigarettes in the lift down to the air raid shelter, so we wouldn't have asked for there to be no cigar.”

According to the story, the anti-tobacco lobby has not had any contact with the Museum, so no one seems to know who eliminated Churchill’s cigar.

The story has been splashed over many of the London papers, with noted author Guy Walters (Hunting Evil and Berlin Games) writing in a commentary in The Telegraph stating “Churchill without a cigar is surely as incorrect as Hitler without his moustache”.

In the Daily Mail a commentary from Harry Phibbs railed against the change to the photograph:
I am not a smoker. I have never smoked. None of my close relatives smoke. But the anti-smoking zealotry has gone too far.

One casualty of that zealotry has been truth. Part of the thought control process is to banish from the media any 'positive images' of smokers - of any images of smokers come to that.

They are to be regarded as non-persons. Most sinister is how this process has been extended.
He ended thus: “I would like fewer people to smoke - but not at the cost of living in a society which has sacrificed truth and freedom.”

Damn right. Revisionist history, no matter in the defence of what cause, is wrong at best and downright dangerous at worst.

Not the first time they photo-shopped tobacco out:

In protest, I just had a smoke.

Tangent/anecdote:
I was asked to do up a powerpoint and do a little radio training for my former civillian job....due to the fact that my WHOPPING three years as a rear-echelon reservist made me the SME on fire drill and radio comms... ::)

And my lead slide was a candid picture of meself kitted up with a manpack comms set....but, I had THE DEVIL'S CIGARETTE in my mouth, so I was asked to photoshop that out.....

I can kinda understand that request but.......Sweet Merciful Crap!....Churchill?!?!?!??!

I'm gonna smoke two...right now....at the same time.
