Here is a site for those Cold War memories and researchers:

The Diefenbunker in Carp (Ottawa) has all four floors open to the public as a Museum now.  It may be a bit of an eye opener for those who think of the world as being a "Peaceful, Loving Place".

That would be an interesting place to visit. Memories indeed.

I still remember doing civil defence air raid drills when I was in public school. Any one else remember those? ( hint - you'll have to be well over 40.)

My first memory is the teacher getting all excited during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 60s.

Several years later in early 1970s I went over to the 4 Brigade Engineer Squadron with a flyover and we got no end of watch out for the commies briefings.

Today - its all gone and with the current emphasis on going on tours to Afghan or Yugo or whatever H _LL hole we think CF is deployable to I say to the young whipper snappers - Tours - ain't been on your kind of a tour - I stared down the entire Warsaw Pact and made them blink which ultimately collapsed the Berlin Wall.

1 June 2005 - I was walking past all the rusting Leopards that are in Montreal - they seem well maintained but thats just the outside - they are all parked near 202 workshop.

Anyone want a 6 wheeler Cougar? There are lots there. Will send pics of the CF Boneyard next time I go down there which should be week of 13 June.

How the mighty have fallen - there are at least an acre of dead Iltis's and crapped out 5 tons - lets get our welder's torches and cut them up for Rebar.

Thank you and good night!

Oh yes - I met a Wallace of the PEIR on a sandy summer in Shilo too.  ;)

Ah, the civil defence drills at school during the Cuban Missle Crisis.    We practiced leaving the classroom and sitting down against the wall in the corridor to protect us from class shards flying through the classrooms.    The overactive imaginations of my grade 3 buddies and I conjured up images of propellor driven fighters (just like our model Spitfires, ME-109s, and Mustangs) coming in low and strafing the school;   like that was going to happen in Winnipeg   ::) ;D
