In what seems to be the language of diplomacy these days, the Israelis do indeed appear to be holding the cards. Having said that, do they want a larger area to control that would, no doubt, turn into an insurgency? To your point, do they need to find a balance between making hay while the sun shines for local advantage and playing a longer game to gain another non-enemy neighbour? Do I need to keep asking rhetorical questions?If the Israelis want a security zone deeper into Syria, they will make one, and the Syrians are in no position to argue.
But it would be wise for Israel to to find if not a friend at least a neutral neighbor at this moment.
While the rest of the world is occupied with other matters, the position of Turkey is likely very important here.
