Commitment

I have been a reservist for over two years now and i have never missed a parade night and i have only missed one exercise. My beef is with individuals who are constantly missing training, and who do not put forth any effort to show any sort of commitment. I realize that many can not focus their lives around the reserves, but you are only asked to appear one night per week and the occaisional weekend. It is not just another part time job. When you signed on the dotted lign and swore allegiance to the Queen you agreed to put 100 effort into your training and parading. If you do show up every parade night and for exercises i congradulate you. Another thing is, if you are going to show up, make it worth your time. Put the most into your training so you can get the most out of it. Also, you are being paid to be there so EARN your pay.

****ey, I hope you‘re being sarcastic! To only miss
one trg weekend in two years is very commendable.
Would it really matter why one missed it? Exams, term papers,
family, sickness, burn-out, job conflicts, are all possible
reasons why. I, the same as many Reservists, have attended
trg rather than go to my high school graduation, attend friends‘
weddings, family functions, and so on. Sometimes it‘s
very disheartening to realise what you‘ve given up, when
you see others who aren‘t as committed, and have really
had it all by not sacrifising anything.

Didn‘t mean it as an insult, just a good humoured comment.

I missed the ex because of school. I started college this past september and it was mandatory that i complete some testing to be accepted into my program. For that reason i felt i had no choice but to miss the ex. If i could have postponned the testing or left the ex for the testing and returned after i would but those options were not available to me!

Good for you! That‘s the nature of having two lives.
They will get conflicted sometimes. I kept waiting for
someone to write again on this thread so I could tell
****ey that I didn‘t mean to beat up on him. I had
hoped he was being sarcastic, and sure enough he was.
Dedicated Reservists give up so much to their units that
occassionally I think it‘s good when a conflict arises
and you can‘t make it in. It reminds everyone not to take
you for granted, and at the same time can reconfirm in your
own mind that you‘d really want to be at the unit, doing
whatever it is everyone is doing.
