Confusion on Rank

I saw that too, but chalked it up to the initial confusion of the attack. I just think newspapers should check their facts before publishing details, especially when dealing with the funerals of deceased members. First time I heard of CFL applied to a Cpl LOL, I held that rank as a Captain!

Actually, after the tenth incentive, you are no longer "Captain for Life", but rather "Master Captain".  I'm trying to get some captain slip ons with a maple leaf for when I hit that mark

Anyone ever wonder why a Major General is lower than a Lieutenant General?
1) in the french army, a major is an NCO. The rank between the Capt and LCol is a Commander.

The rank used to be, a long long time ago, a Sergeant Major General..........
Not sure if it was the NCOs who asked the Sgt to be removed OR the Officers being embarassed about a Sergeant Major being above a Brigadier

The modern ranks as noted are contractions of the ancient forms, a General is shortened from the Captain General, his subordinate(s) would be Lieutenant General(s), with the Sergeant Major General being the Chief of Staff in modern terminology. The Sergeant portion of the rank gradually fell out of use, while the Sergrant Major rank/title grew independently inside regiments. I don't believe there was a campaign or pressure from the NCO's to drop the Sergeant portion of the rank.

The Brigade is a much more recent military formation, and the rank of "Brigadier General" post dates the others by a considrable margin.

If you really want to be confused, several militaries also adopted the rank of Colonel General.......

I had heard of that before as well. I always said I would rather be a content Captain than a miserable Major.

Lieutenant is the right arm of a Capt.

The Lt. Col is the Right arm of a Col

The Lt. Gen is the Righ arm of a General.

All others who have a 'prefix' are subordinate and come before a General in the order of career progression.

Go down to your local Navy League Cadet Corps. A Lt (NL) wears the Maple Leaf over the rank insignia.

Re: BGen: Dunno... the Brits still use "Brigadier;" I suspect we went to "BGen" around the time of the unification... deal... to align more with our friends to the south.

IMHO, army ranks in German just sound so much better... for the most part. For example, instead of "Lieutenant" you get "Ober Leutnant." But instead of "Major" you get "Major" (pronounced "My-oar"). But in the SS, the equivalent rank was "Sturmbahnfurer" or "Storm Unit Leader," and LCol was "Ober Sturmbahnfurer" or "Senior Storm Unit Leader." Now *those* are rank names you can get used to!

Just remember, all those german words turn into those sausage-long words: they become one.  Seems like the Germans like unifying everything into one, like Europe ;D
So, "Oberleutnant", and "Obersturmbannführer", stuff like that.
My fave?  "Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzungsschild"
