Okay, so on this date in 1944 it was D-Day, and I would like to give a big  :salute: to all the men and women who helped the war effort and fought and died. To all of them, Thank You!  :salute:

The papers are to busy moaning the plight of the Palestinians at the hands of their evil occupiers!

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER MARKING THE 63RD ANNIVERSARY D-DAY

June 6, 2007
Heiligendamm, Germany

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement regarding the 63rd anniversary of the D-Day invasion:

"June 6th looms large in Canada’s history. Today we mark the 63rd anniversary of one of history’s greatest battles – D-Day – and we honour the Canadian heroes who fought and died there.

On June 6th, 1944, tens of thousands of Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen took part in what remains the most important seaborne invasion of all time. Its purpose was to land the military might of Canada and her allies, from there to begin the long and laborious campaign that eventually freed Europe from Nazi tyranny.

It is essential that as a nation, we remember the ordinary Canadians whose extraordinary courage and sacrifice made D-Day a success – the turning point of the Second World War.

From coast to coast – from villages and farms, cities and towns, and from every corner of Canada – came these hometown heroes who risked everything in the defence of their country and the advancement of freedom.

On the anniversary of the D-Day landings it is our responsibility – and our privilege – to pay proper tribute to the Canadians who fought that day, including the more than two thousand who never came home.

We will never forget the sacrifice they made – or fail to defend what they fought for."

Maybe now that Mr. Harper has commented the media will get on board.  I woke up knowing it was D-Day, am wearing my poppy, looked through some of my books on this momentous event, and am having conversations with my colleagues about it.  However, I haven't heard any mention of the anniversary...neither on the news on TV this morning nor on the radio.  I am obviously not watching/listening to the right stations.  I think it's an important day to remember & show respect for those who were there.  Lest we forget.  :salute: :cdn:

I know D, I have not heard it on any news at all, yet it's such an important date. I'm glad that the PM had words to say about it, too bad more people never.

There was a brief mention on Canada AM this morning before I left for work.

Thanks for putting it up on here Mike  :)

The Officers and the RSM of the Battalion that I serve in just marked the occassion at lunch - the CO read the PMs message, the Padre said a few words, and we knocked back a shot of rum.  These things are important, and cannot be allowed to fall by the wayside.

The CO also reminded the junior officers that their job is not to read Regimental history, rather it is to create it.
