From getting rid of dirt to being a Russian heartthrob.

And as a much younger man. National Service, probably before he was commissioned in the Middlesex Regiment.

By chance I watched The Great Escape (on Tubi) over the weekend. It's one of those movies that never gets old and I had once met (about forty years ago) one of the real escapers. During this re-watching, it occurred to me, of the "fifty" (in the film's version of events), David McCallum's character is the only one who could legitimately have been shot while escaping. If you recall the scene, he struggled with and shot the Gestapo officer on the train platform and then was shot while escaping. While not as cut and dried, the shooting of Donald Pleasance's character could also fall into the same category.

While broadly following the true events, many details of the movie were fiction, including American actors speaking really bad accents.
