Hi all,

Any info will be greatly appretiated. THANK YOU ALL.

During the summers your are most likely on courses for your trade or exercises. But the way the system is, you are not required to particiate. Your family is not being moved around with you as a part-time reservist.

So you can continue to serve like the rest of the year, 1 evening a week and 1 weekend per month?

You will have to do trades training at the begining and that happens during the summer........even basic training will need to be done during the summer as its not always available in its "week-end only" form.

Most likely your unit will stand down in the spring as most everyone is on course all summer. If so there won't be the usual 1 night/week etc going on until your unit stands back up in the fall.

You would be nothing by a liablility to show up 1 night a week and 1 wknd a month. You got to devote a lot more time than that to get anywhere and be trained properly. Its the army after all, not Cubs or Scouts! if thats all you have to offer, find another part time job!

Recruit training, trades training for the right MOC are demanding to say the least. Its more than one 3 hr parade on aTuesday night, or a weekend a month in Wx.

I suggest you speak to a recruiter to find out your obligations, and answer other questions for you. The recruiting process can be lengthly.

While a recruit, you would have to attend your basic training courses. BQ & SQ both of which are approx 14 days each & can be taught "part time" meaning weekends between September and May.  Your basic trate course (BMQ) can last anything from 30 to 60 days and can only be done "full time" during the summer months...

Once you are qualified, as a part time reservist, you are required to train at least once per month to remain "Effective" though, you should train something like 37 mandays between Sept & May (9 months) - as per your unit's training plan...

You are also expected to, on a periodic basis, participate in rank and trade courses that are run during the summer months (June - August).

While you are on course - there are no provisions for accomodating spouse & kids - you leave em at home and depending on where your courses are run, you may or may not have an opportunity to spend the occasional weekend with em.

If you are looking to do the strict minimum, save yourself the headache / heartache... don't bother.

Realistically you should plan on 6 evenings per month and more likely two weekends a month.  One for unit training and the other for courses.  As suggested stop in and see a local recruiter at the unit nearest your location.

Agreed.  The one night a week and one weekend a month "standard", is no longer the case (at least in the Units I'm familiar with in NS).  The "average" Pte/Cpl soldier is expected to do one night a week and usually two weekends a month this year.  The leaders are expected to do more than that.  For example if I were able to attend every weekend that I "should" this fall, I'd have been working every weekend from the 13th of Oct until the 15th of Dec less one.  My Sect Commanders will be expected to attend on average three weekends a month this Fall.

As stated in above responses, if all you are looking for is the bare minimum, save us all some work and go elsewhere.

Please read CMP 20/04   - Administrative Policy Of Class “A”, Class “B” And Class “C” Reserve Service

It answers the most basic questions of reserve life. At the ref it states that your command (LFA, CMS, AirCom) sets the minimum. I know from my command the bare minimum is 12 days of the year, or 24 nights between the begining of Sept through the end of May. In my command, weekends are not a given. On the other hand, there are lots of optional training that is not normally offered. The simple Recuirting one night a week and one weekend a month is to earn your interest to ask more questions from a unit close to you and for them to answer those questions.
