Deployments and Military in the News

Now its been a couple of weeks since the "big" story broke on 2 Oct. Soon there will be no hide nor hair of reporting from Afganistan, or heaven-forbid-someone-finds-it-on-a-map Bosnia. My flight out to Bosnia made the news cause we were the first ones to leave Canada after the guys died, and the only questions anyone got asked was prefixed by "with events in Afghanistan,".

Will this turn into tours like Eritrea, East Timor, and even the last 13 rotos SFOR has had where the mainstream media and the Canadian public forget that we are away? Heck after the first month or so, nobody read about OP Apollo until people died....

How do we keep up attention home in Canada to what it is we do in the world?

I don‘t think we can unless we start implanting reporters in units, ships etc being deployed. That would give people back home something to folow. Otherwise the only time the military gets any interest is during a crash, a foul up or a death.

I think there is very little we can do.
Since right now Canada has been fixated on our new PM-to-be and the possibility of changes once he takes office, and the old one leaving behind his legacy. Then there was the fires in B.C. There is the Kobe Bryant trial. Oh yeah who can forget the girl/girl kiss on MM that covered Time magazine. Uh, what else was there? Oh yeah, Iraq and the neferious evil Dr Hussein!

Nigeria and Mr Taylor, American Idol, and of course SurvivorXMCII.

Jeesh who can compete with the intellectual level of mainstream society and what it wants to see on the tele?

Armymedic. For some good coverage are you prepared to kiss your CSM on national television like CBC for some attention to Bosnia?

Just kidding! I‘m feeling rather happy cuz it‘s Saturday afternoon and I have a six pack of good beer in the fridge.
