I have to be honest - I have not run into many who are using the military in the manner that you have suggested above.   Perhaps you have just had a run of bad luck with the leaders that you have been exposed to.

Maybe your right. I've meet and served with some awesome officers that I respect a great deal. I guess it is a case of a few making the whole look bad.

Surely there is room in the military for a little academia?

Agreed. There should always be room for such. But not at the expense of the basic idea of having a military in the first place. To carry out your governments wishes in either the offense or defense of killing the other guy more then you. And there is nothing ethical about that.

I think we have lost sight of that fact in the last 30 or so years. The disbandment of the CAR is a good example of it. We're looking at being "ethical", repecting everyones "rights" and how to carry out humanitarian and aid missions more so then we are looking at being able to defend our soil and going to the fighting aid of our allies. Those things are noble and fine, but are not within the basic reasons for having a military.

The sole reason for a soldiers existence is to defend (serve) their country and its ideals (allies) and to die if necessary. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

(sorry, I'm in a bit of a bitchy mood tonight. :o Nice to have you back PPCLI Guy. Missed ya.)

Army transformation is just a means to save money? maybe so. If General Hillier has it his way, they will get rid of alot of HQs and that means alot of staff types will either be (a) back in front line units or (b) out of a job...

I think we should give transformation a chance. I beleive as long as Hillier is heading up the show (hopefully for 3-4 years) we will head in the right direction.
