When a soldier recruits or CT‘s to the dragoons, what kind of position would they be given inside the armored troop. Would it depend on what squadren they are in? Would they become a lav 3 driver-gunner pretty eairly on or would they be stuck fueling up HLs on a pol farm for the first year or two of their contract?

F echelon asap.

Been awhile, but most of the young folk coming in would get a pcf immediately, and then onto a sabre sqn- the "old guys" tended to be in admin troop...very few ever went to a Base duty like pol that I knew of.

Too many code words dude
PCF? and sabre sqn?
Pretend your talking to an infantry reservest who doesn‘t know much about the armored. :)

You would first get a Coyote drivers course. Then maybe a Surv Op course then a gunners course. It may take as much as 4 yrs to get them all or just a yr. All NEW soldiers will get drivers.
A lil info. PCF- Primary Combat Function
Sabre Troops- the fighting troops ie Tank or Coyote or Assult troop.
Sabre Sqn- the fighting Sqn ie Tank, Coyote Sqn
 :tank:

Awesome, thanks a lot guys. I‘m weighting my desire to roll around in lav 3‘s and coyotes against being stuck on a QL3 course again.

I had a ball on my TQ3 course. Got to drive a variety of vehicles (FMC driver wheeled course), shoot machine guns, fire anti-tank missiles, throw hand grenades, and drink a lot of beer.

There was a (very) little drill, a few morning inspections, but mostly "guy" stuff.

Once again, I had a ball.

I‘m planning on joining the Canadian forces as a armoured soldier and i was woundering do you guys also train as infantry?

Patty?? Patty O‘lantern?? Is that you?? Long time no see!!! (sorry, I was in a funny mood this morning) To answer your question, everyone gets trained as an infanteer in basic training. In the Armour Corps, we do get to do some infantry training when we become part of an assault troop in a recconaissance squadron. Very limited infantry training, but some. Hope that helps....

Bzz

no not patty O‘lantern lol sorry to get ur hopes up i‘m just regual pat Tremblay i couldnt use pat it was already taken. i was mostly referring to Battle school (or what ever the armoured guys call it) but ur answer mostly answered it thanks!

Oh, and here I thought I‘d run inta me mate Patty O‘Furniture. :blotto:

Patty
The Armoured Corps does have ( or had) an Assault Troop (CS 4-4) and they are trained the same as an Infantry Pioneer. ( at least I was)
However I have since heard that the Infantry has gotten rid of the Assault Pioneer course and all relevant formations. I wonder if the Armoured Corps has followed suite?

Last time I checked 44 was still going strong. The only major change and it was awhile ago is the RCD Recce no longer has Jump Troop.

There is no such thing as assault pioneers in the infantry or assault troop in the armoured corps anymore and hasnt been for the passed five years or so.

Well...There you go...Another relevant and quite neccessary skill set down the drain.

Anyone see any trend on where the new troops are going, I'm applying for Armoured and I'm wondering if most are going Straths or RCD's? Also didn't there used to be a difference in the two i.e Straths were heavy and RCD were mostly recce. Any info would be good. Thanks

The RCDs spent seventeen years in Germany as Canada's 'Tank' regiment in NATO.  They were replaced in 1987 by the 8 CH who filled that role until CFE was closed down less than ten years later.

All the Armour Regiments in Canada were the same in the 1990's to 2004, until the Liberals decided that Tanks were obsolete dinosaurs of the Cold War era.  Now the RCD and 12 RBC are strictly Recce, the 8 CH have followed in the footsteps of the FGH and once again become only a Militia Regiment, the Strats are now a part of "The Great Experiment" in trialing the new MGS (if it is ever produced) and ADATS/MMEV (or whatever) combo force.  With all the Leos in the West, and no purchase of the MGS, with Force Reductions, the Strats (because they have those "Dinosaurs called Tanks") may also be sacrificed to become a Reserve Regiment, or even worse be disbanded, so that the most Junior Regiment, (12 RBC) and Franco Unit can survive.  JK  ;D

Aye Carumba, perhaps I should go Sig Ops, if this is the case, doesn't sound like there is much of a future in armoured!

Not much a future at all as the next step os to become battlefield taxi's for the inf.  They want us to start crewing the lav3's so all they have to do is get out of the back and fight

Better than joining them. At least you still get to crew and fight a vehicle.
