I am not sure if this thread has been started and an answer yet figured out over what to do if you are come upon a military public monument .
On a military base even in civs you pay respect to such structure. Are we then required to do the same with a public monument? I asked this question because of what happened to me a couple of days ago. Story: I was in uniform and even if I was not I would have done the same I passed a military monument for fallen soldiers with our Canadian flag flying I did I full salute with eyes turned towards the monument and after passing resume my normal walking. I was then approached by a gentleman who told I don't have to do that, ie salute and furthermore I don't have to even do an "eyes-right." He was a younger gentleman, I didn't asked if he was military or not, I just acknowledged him and kept on walking.
My question is what is the proper procedure if I am faced with this situation again. Repeat above actions or do something else?

I apologize before-hand if this thread or something similar has been produced and answered before.

Nothing wrong with a salute to a memorial in uniform.....you're just paying respects to fallen soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Regards

I second Franko on that...

Your doing the right thing elminister

We don't know who or what the A** Hole that approached you was. Or what the SOP's are today. But if I had been there, I'd have said "Well done Laddie" and can I stand you a wet one.

Cheers.

Who knows what the young man's agenda, experience or aim was...

You did the right thing. And you did the rightthing again by NOT reducing the little putz to a smoking pile of rubble!

Good on you.

I would rather do it "more formal than needed" than "not formal enough".

Last time I flipped through the drill and ceremonial manual (and seem to recall from week 4 of Basic during that saluting test to get my cornflake), if you are in uniform and you pass a cenotaph, you salute it, since it is one of those "salutable objects".  Whoever told you otherwise is either a crackhead or should redo recruit school.

for some reason I feel even happier that I did respect that monument. And will continue paying respect, because they fought for Canada, and I don't know about others but Canada is ME.
