hello all,

I am writting this for advise as to things to do while waiting for your application to go through, whether they be up-grading, volunteer work, or working out. I wish to do things that will better my application during the time that I am, "hurrying and waiting". When my application does go through, (currently waiting on laser eye correction time period)and I have my up-date interview I have some things to discuss that betters my application. I currently volunteer with a physically disabled young guy 4 days a week, and work out daily. As for courses to up-grade my formal education cant really be up-graded unless I went back to university. But what about things like first aid? Are there any applicable "civi" courses that look good for a new recruit to have? Please feel free to pass on suggestions....

thanks

Ryan

I'd say you are on the right path so far by working out and volunteering (which is very good natured of you, very admirable). What exactly are you applying for? Of course there are courses you can take that may prove advantageous but how about finding some relevant courses? First Aid is always better to have than not. Keep working out and upgrading yourself because it definitely doesn't hurt to become stronger and wiser.

Cheers.

EDIT: My bad, didn't see the "131" under your avatar but I do not know what that is exactly and the recruiting site doesn't not use any numerical references..

If you're interested in eventually going SAR, I have have been told by a current 131 that these courses will help on the application. They may expire by the time you apply, but you can easily renew later. They will also look great on your initial military application.

- Courses in Anatomy & Physiology
- Basic Trauma Life Support
- Advanced Trauma Life Support

The Basic and Advanced trauma courses can (each) usually be done over a weekend. Check with your local EMS.

BTW, what are you applying for?

thanks guys,

I am initially applying for ATIS (1st) or AVS (2nd). I dont really think I have got a shot at the 1st as it is currently closed. But yeah SAR is definetly the goal eventrually.

Well, keep it up. Zombie gave you some sound advice there and I hope it all works out well for you - in the short or long term.

Keep us posted.

Cheers

Thanks guys I will definitely keep everyone informed. The public health nurse that also works with the family I help out with mentioned giving me a reference letter at the end of the summer...do you think it would be advisable to forward this to my MCC (military counselor)? I mean I have already giving my 2 reference letters from ex employers.

Thanks

Ryan

Reference letters are always good...they will build up your portfolio whether you go.  Check with your MCC if he/she needs another reference letter.

I had a third reference form filled out and also had another reference from my captain in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, but they did not want either since I had already handed in the required 2. I did mention these in the interview though; the interviewer said that even though they do not need them it was good for him to know and made his decision easier. I would still check if they will take them, but definitely mention it in your interview. If you're already done your interview then I wouldn't worry about it too much beyond seeing if they'll add it to your file.
