I was hoping someone could weigh in on the real-world transferability of these two trades as well as the pros and cons of each. I couldn't find anything specifically using the search function so if anyone has run across a similar post that already answers this question, kindly point me in that direction.

Thanks in advance

For applicants who have a Department of National Defense Certificate of Military Achievement with a QL5 rating and rank of corporal in one of nine matched trades (below), a copy of your Member’s Personnel Record Resume (MPRR) is sufficient evidence of your qualifications and experience; once submitted, the College will verify the validity of your certification and approve you to write the C of Q exam without further training.

To answer my own question here for anyone else who happens to stumble across this thread with the same question, the short answer is that QL5 Electrical Distribution (ED) Tech is recognized by the Red Seal Program as a Construction Electrician (upon writing Red Seal exams) and Electrical Generating Systems (EGS) Tech does not carry over to any Red seal trade.

For these reasons, the ED Tech trade seems to be more sought after by applicants and therefore, more difficult to get in to. I've met a few EGS techs who wanted to switch to ED tech but couldn't because of how red EGS was as a trade. ED techs also get into fire alarm systems and airfield lighting in addition to general electrical work. That said, I've also heard that generator techs are occasionally poached by mining/oil companies to maintain the generators at off-the-grid locations - often for big bucks. There's also the possibility of working in sales and/or service for a generator manufacturer/retailer. Once you reach the rank of WO in any construction engineering (CE) trade, you become a CE Superintendent.

Looking for a change of scenery,  how is the ED trade currently red/green? What are typical lengths of postings? Can hours be transferred to get ur red seal?
