Just returned from New Brunswick and have a serious problem with the way that the Government of that Province screws the people over, with their Tax on all containers, bottles and cans in the name of Recycling.  Every one of these items purchased is charged an extra amount for Recycling.  Unlike other Provinces, in New Brunswick when you Return the bottles and cans you only get back half of the fee charged.  You are charge 20 cents for a bottle of wine and get 10 cents back when you return the bottle.  Juice containers are charged.  Pop cans are charged.  Liqour bottles are charged.  The people of New Brunswick are being given the shaft by the Province, in that they are only getting refunded half of what they are charged. 

Other Provinces charge similar fees for recycling, but refund the whole fee when the items are recycled.  Quite a scam in New Brunswick, don't you think?

When I lived in Fredericton, I was amazed at the incompetence of the Recycling Companies that ran the Blue Box Program.  They could not make it work without Government handouts.  I imagine that hasn't changed much.

As I understand it, the Environmentalists and large waste management companies have been creating a scam on all of us in North America.  They have created these Blue Box, Grey Box, Green Box, Black Box, and many other programs to create Jobs and further strain the populace's financial woes in requiring ever increasing amounts of Tax Dollars to be diverted into their coffers.  Perhaps we should look at Peel Region's state-of-the-art Single Stream Recycling Facility.  All their garbage and recyclables are collected by one pick up, not several.  None of this having separate trucks to collect paper only, or plastics and metals only, or compost only.  Everything is brought to one location and sorted there by one truck, once a week.  What isn't recycled is put into high efficiency furnaces and burned to produce power. 

Makes you wonder doesn't it.

When it comes to NB....nothing surprises me. I never knew what a tax return was until I was posted to Ontario. I always owed due to the high provincial tax rates.

I even went in on many occasions to make sure that the proper amount was being taken off my pay, still no change. Got posted here and I got $1300 back. Damn near craped my pants.

But I digress.

Most programs in NB are operated on a shoestring budget and not managed very well IMHO. Moncton takes the cake with residents being charged for excessive garbage. They have to pay for bags to contain it all and if they go over their allotment....tough.

They have a full waste management/ recycling system in effect and it's been up and running for well over 15 years. It's been costing the locals there more and more every year, with increasing everyone's taxes as well. Then there are the user fees.

As for the container debacle, that's been ongoing for at least the past 10 years. Pay 10 cents per 2L bottle you get 5 cents back. The recyclers gets the other 5. Then they sell off all they collect to the factories at a tidy profit.

Funny thing is there are some containers that cannot be recycled due to the chemicals in them and get taxed anyways, then get tossed into the landfill anyways.

I was living in edmonton the year they made the change from Blue box to blue bags. Overnight i now had to buy blue recycling bags at the store...... :

New Brunswick sucks ... but it's not a provincial thing here ... It's vastly different from municipality to municipality.

Oromocto was officially known as "Canada's Model Town" a couple decades past -- though that's certainly IS NOT a valid claim to be made anymore (althought the big sign coming into town from Freddy still pronounces it as such  : ). It may like to think it is, but it hasn't even been close to it for years now.

In Belleville, Ontario -- I had to pay for each and every bag of garbage placed at the curb via the purchase of "bag tags". Here I don't pay for my garbage to be picked up, it's included in my property taxes which are quite lower than they were in Belleville.

Here I pay for all my containers and get back the 50% (ie 5 cents) when I take it back myself to the flea/rat infested drop off depot. In Belleville I didn't pay anything on the containers, yet I didn't get anything back either -- just chucked them in the blue box and sat them at the end of the driveway once a week.

There's no such thing as blue boxes here in Oromocto. What actually exists are two points (at the opposite ends of town) where there are large blue dumpsters for community use. You collect and save your recycling at home (in a closet, on your back deck, in your garage ... wherever) ... and then you get the priveledge of dragging it all to one of the two collection points yourself to throw into the giant blue monster dumpster ... which in actuality is a small blue dumpster (given the towns size) and which can usually be found overflowing because 4 families decided to recycle that day.  :

Then they wonder why no one bothers to recycle?? D'uh.

Then of course you travel further outside to the town limits to toss in your containers to get your 50% back ... with a guarantee there'll be 25 cars ahead of you inline with 6 months worth of overflow bottles in each vehicle and the standard TWO staff working one vehicle at a time, being absolutely 110% certain to hand count each and every container to ensure that you don't get an extra penny of one of their 5 cents with your own 5 cents.

I have said this to my husband quite often --

I'd rather just pay for the bag tag for the garbage ... they could take the money coming in from THAT to pay for blue box pickup at the curb -- they are coming to the curb to pick up the garbage anyway.

I've got me one of those Eurobins too!! I love it -- funny that they do have the adapters here for those massive garbage cans at the ends of our drives.  :-\

Hey TCBF sturg county might be that advanced, but my sis in law lives in St Albert, and the taxes they pay, are astronomical compared to what we pay in Sherwood Park, and isn't Sturgeon county almost bankrupted? The only thing I wish we had in the Park, is a recycle program!!

But I also agree that Edmonton is run by commies!!! maybe one day they can figure out a transit (subway) that goes to places, that people want to go! but so is NB, I don't mind going on courses, but wouldn't want to be posted there, missed that bullet last APS!!!

Yeah, but half the town isn't paying property taxes either (ohhh those PMQs), and quite simply those locals or home owners not living in PMQs who ARE paying the costs for the Town's services, aren't willing to see increased taxes to fix shit up for shitloads of people living in PMQs who aren't anteing up any tax money to the municipality.

In BC, you get the recycling fee refunded completely, but there is also a 2 cent 'environmental' fee that does not get reimbursed.
