First off...we as Staff are not trying to regulate what you place on your own Facebook, mytube etc account but we would like to remind you that on the World Wide Web there are few secrets and what you say in your accounts can be construed the wrong way. For example, if you identify yourself as a member of the CF and describe yourself as "takes no prisoners" or as a "baby killer" how do you think that looks to the public. It does not reflect well on you or the CF. So folks use a bit of common sense otherwise what you say can and will come back and bite us on our collective @sses.

Please, remember also that:

1.  What you 'publish' on the Internet tends to take on a (permanent) life of its own; and

2.  There are people who can and do 'break' codes and privacy settings and the like.

Nothing on the Internet can be considered private and the overwhelming majority of the billion or so netizens are not to be numbered as being amongst your friends.  Some of them are your enemies.

Those connected with an armed force will simply blow off the "pun intended"/"black humor"/"sarcasm intended" of the above and like remarks, but remember those with an agenda and the general public can and sometimes will use them to illustrate their POV, or simply take them seriously.

You'd think this would be common sense, but despite the name I don't think it's actually all that common...

When more organizations begin to take action, maybe more people will think before they act...

I am one of those people that is on "crackbook". A lot of people are getting on it.

Here's some hints. While it's not a protection against those people that E.R. Campbell mentions, this is a precautionary step.

1) Set your profile so that only friends can see certain things (notes, photos, events, personal details, etc.) Me, I have it set up so that only those who are my friends can even see my profile.

2) Avoid putting too many of your address details. Rumour has it that collections and other types are actually using facebook. Also, it's just a safe PERSEC thing.

3) If you're going to mention that you're in the military on your profile under employment, I would suggest you not specify your unit. Not that it would matter for those who are in, it's not too hard to find, but it's another PERSEC thing.

4) Avoid the questionable groups. It sounds like common sense, but, as mentioned, that's not common anymore.

5) WATCH WHAT YOU SAY!!! Especially when you identify yourself as a soldier. The difference between here and facebook? Here, you are a screen name (you should still watch what you say here) but on facebook, those statements you make are attached to YOUR NAME. Can be bad JuJu if you cross the line, and your unit or CoC hears about it.

An article on this subject in the local paper today, making a statement I completely agree with.  If you're worried about your personal privacy, then dont use Facebook.

Another good point they made is that the younger generation is more public and less concerned with personal information, so a note of warning to parents with younguns out there (cross-reference to the thread going on sexual offenders using Facebook, if we have one...)
