Flying A Helicopter

Everyone's a novelist, now eh?

I'm gonna sit back, let him write his book, and wait for it. It's not mr. Preece's first, so I'm assuming he at least has some idea as to what he's doing.

Stealing a Sea King is quite difficult. It's not self start capable, ie. you must have some sort of external power, and unless you've ever flown one, you'd never even get the starter engaged. Hell, I've got over 500hrs on Sea Kings and sometimes that bloody starter just won't engage. They can be quite finicky at times. Not to mention that you've also got to figure out how to spread the blades and then get both engines driving the rotor. For someone that hasn't operated one in the past, I would say it's impossible to get a Sea King off the ground.

Will the book have a car chase scene?  They can steal a couple of iltis' or an LSVW.  Now that would be awesome!!

Make sure that the big angry one, with the gold chains and wierd hairstyle, is afraid to fly.  So that just before they highkack the Seaking they drug his milk so he falls asleep.

OPSEC people OPSEC, next thing you know cadets will be stealing helicopters and low rent newpapers will quote the site and say were giving step by step instructions on how to steal Canadian Forces helicopters because we hate them that much.

You can't be serious.  ::)

The things weigh 10 tons, are they just going to push it out of the secure hangar?

I just looked at my AOI, all classified material must be marked as such, the Sea King AOI is not marked in anyway as being sensitive material, nor must it be secured in the manner that classified documents must be.

They just have to couple up the ASE and then twist a few buttons.

Isn't it a GHARS (SP?)  Inch?

Nice try though G2G.  ;D

We changed out 4 GHARS gyros on NATO, voodoo magic is how the GHARS operates. GHARS feeds the ASE, you need them both!

You volunteering Loachman?  Oh wait, you said something about flying it eloquently....  ;)

Actually, I said "elegantly" - and haven't I always been NICE to you?

In all seriousness, no, not me, because I am both sober and know enough to recognize a dumb idea (me trying to start/fly it - there's a reason why we have instructors and long courses - not writing a book).

There are just SO many dials and buttons and knobs and switches and lights and stuff...

Inch, the explanation just needs to be a high level overview.  The pilot is a former pilot with flying experience.  I appreciate the many tips I've had from you, however, I do not intend to go into too much detail.

Is it possible to explain what type of Power Supply is needed and how I can hook it up?
How do I engage the starter?
How do you figure out how to spread the blades?
Do I start the engines one at a time?

Regards

Steve

While unclas, the Aircraft Operating Instructions are still a controlled document, so I won't get too technical.

A/C power is the preferred method, and in fact the only method if the previous shutdown was not a D/C shutdown (which it normally is not). It comes from a ground power unit (GPU) that must be brought out to the aircraft and plugged into the A/C receptacle on the front right of the aircraft below the pilot's window. The power cart is about the size of the carts they bring your baggage to the airliners with.

#1 is started first by pressing the starter button, making the microswitches (micros) in the handle in the correct order, and then releasing the button. Kind of a flick of the wrist really.

Once #1 is running, the generators can be turned on and external power can be pulled.

The pylon is spread first using the switches on the overhead console (something you would need to know beforehand since 3 switches must be made in the correct order for it to move, as well as a couple micros that must be met), once locked into position, the blades can be switched to "spread" and they'll spread hydraulically.

With the blades locked in flight position, you can start #2. Once #2 is running, you bring up the power on #2, release the rotor brake to engage the rotor and continue bringing the power up on #2. Once the rotor is spinning at 100%, #1 is brought to idle and the switch from accessory drive to flight drive is made (again, a couple micros to make or it won't switch). #1 is brought up to match #2 and you now have both engines turning the rotor and you're pretty much ready to go flying.

Hope that answers your questions.

For the OPSEC police out there,  it's all UFI to anyone that doesn't know what micros need to be made and how to make them, thus the Sea King fleet is safe from theft.  ;D

That's why they have to guard the Jet Ranger budgies in Portage.......battery, fuel, starter button....gone in 60 seconds!  ;D

D@MN IT!

Open hatch at rear of aircraft under tail boom.  Fold down crank.  Wind 500 times for basic aircraft launch at sea level.  Add one turn of crank for each kilo of co-pilot and other baggage.  Add one turn of crank for every ten feet above sea level and for every tenth of a degree of ambient temperature above 20C.  Use extra-strength rubber band for high speed chase and/or aerobatics ......  ;D

Aww Michael...that's how you start the CH-53 not the Seaking  ::)  ;D

Yeah, but they do look pretty sitting in the trees, squawking!!   :)

Inch:  Many thanks for the information.  I fully appreciate it.

Best regards and all the best guys
