The Black Beret was first worn in Canada as Regimental headdress on May 9th, 1937 by The Essex Regiment (TANK)(now The Windsor Regiment(RCAC)) assigned to Windsor, Ontario. The Regiment‘s first Church Parade was a fitting debut for the Essex Regiment (TANK) black beret. The black beret soon became a proud symbol of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.
It was easier and more practical to wear, in armoured vehicles, than the standard forage cap. The colour, I think, was picked for obvious reasons.
