John Titor claimed to be a soldier from 2038.

He says there is supposed to be an american civil war this year.

Yup. If you dig through the links I posted above, they've actually tracked down who the spam guy was, and he's really just messed in the head. It's kind of sad that people on the internet took advantage of his unfortunate mental state...

As you say, Titor appears to be someone else.

I know, I know. I'll admit I laughed my arse off while reading through the long e-mail conversations people had with that guy, trying to sell him  things they passed off as time travel equipment.

Here is an interesting story for you.

Once, in the 80's this bartender had a patron who claimed to be a time traveller. The story is quoted below;

"In my bar tending days (80's) I had a guy tell me that he was from the
future. The guy also told me that not only was he from the future, but
that the CIA beamed hit lists to him over the TV signal. I looked up at
the TV in the bar that was tuned to Hill Street Blues and told him that
I must not get that channel, went to the phone, and called the cops to
get this schizophrenic nut out of my bar before the CIA told him to kill
me. "
