Forbidden Places - Dec. 6th

Posted by Rob Latimer from Canada on December 09, 1998 at 02:13:59:

So... this is my first venture into the war diary, I‘ve
found it interesting reading from time to time..

Did anyone catch a program called "Forbidden Places" on
Discovery Channel this past Sunday night? They had some great
coverage of the recent Brigade ex. at Suffield in June.

Lot‘s of good coverage seems like the armour boys got
the most press. As a civie, I was impressed to see
some clear focus on "warfighting" skills at a large scale.

As I live down in the S.E. corner of AB. it‘s nice to see
some stuff on what the Canadians are doing as opposed to always
hearing about the Brit.‘s and their battle groups at
Suffield.

Anyone else catch this program... thoughts?...

Take care.

Yeah, I saw it, great show. They really portrayed the soldier in a good light, not the politically correct, warm fuzzy peacekeepers that every politician wants us to be. I think that any civvy who saw it will realize that although DND has had some big cuts in the past few years, we still have some punch in our army, we still have top-notch soldiers and have still managed to acquire some great new equipment despite the cutbacks.

One thing though, I can‘t remember his name, but the full colonel in charge looked like he was only about 29 years old. How does a guy stay looking so young? You guys have a fountain of youth in Alberta or what?

I agree, finally a show about our grunts, not our SARs, not our Navy, but the boys in green, or "death tecs" as our young Col likes to call them. But of course, the treadheads seeemed to get the most attention, and like every other documentary there was a tendency to do a little acting from pte to Col they all talked ‘tough‘ and liked to invent touch or impressive things to say when the camera was on them, but that‘s ok, what could you expect in light of a rare showing of media confidence, although isn‘t Forbidden Places American? Anyway, it was a positive effort but maybe they should consider doing more shows, each one focussing more on the individual arms. Either way, it was fun to see some familiar faces.

I saw it, and thought that it was very well done. It was very reassuring to see everybody wearing Kevlar with the new camm pattern, by the way. The Forces needs more publicity like this.

The Commander of 12 CMBG is Colonel Andrew Leslie, and you‘re right, he both looks and is young, although 29 is a bit of a stretch.

It may interest the readers to know that is the grandson of Gen McNaughton, and the sone of BGen Leslie, Gunners all.

Col Leslie was also a UN Commander in Knin when genocides/ethnic cleansings were going on in full view of the world press - an excellent bit of coverage is available from BBC.

Col Leslie was appropriatel decorated for his steadfast stance in the face of superior weapons manned by slivovitz-fueled animals. He also provided a written deposition on the incident to the Tribunal in the Hague.

Col Leslie is an outstanding officer - it‘s a great pity and shame that his integrity and focus on the job is increasingly in the minority in the Army.

I‘m a great speller - just can‘t type worth a damn. Col Leslie is of course Comd of 1 CMBG, not 12 CMBG. Apologies for various other mis-typings - I hope the gist of the message got through.

Want to know a little tidbit of UFI. The very last scene at the end of that episode, where the commentator was addressing the camera, it was filmed on October 29th at Nathan Philips Square in downtown Toronto. How do I know that? He was leaning against my cam net clad Iltis, standing behind my C-6.

I am so non-plussed by your concilatory comments. But please, do tell, why the so obviously fake names? Afraid to make your little comments count? Anyone of marginal intelligence would take my initial statements at face value and then carry-on. What an immature reaction in an open forum for discussion.
Grow up.

I‘m sorry we both don‘t own personal iltises and c6‘s. ACTUALLY, do you own your unit? "My" oh "my" aren‘t we a little testy, why did‘nt you just take our responses at face value and then "carry on" tough guy?

Actually, the use of this name was no more than to convey my thoughts to all in the group to an imature soul who must state his own importance to the world by using comments like "my" iltis, and "my" C-6", as if anyone really cared who‘s they were. By the way, theyh belong to me, Indeed, and every other tax payer in Canada, not you!

just to set matters straight, I do not own an Iltis, nor do I own a C-6, I am sorry for this misconception

Hey dude, knock it off. He was only stating that the last scene was shot in Toronto,
and that he was there, proving where it was shot.
