Former RMC student alleges MPs botched investigation into spy cam in her room

I used to agree with this. But my view has shifted over time. High schools are producing a subpar product these days. This isn't me trying to "Back in my day.....". Grade inflation is so bad that Waterloo, for example, applies a -12% correction factor to all but a handful of high schools in the country. The average university applicant these days is an A student. But somehow they are all having issues with everything from math to literacy to even computer literacy in their first year of college or university. Imagine trying to build an officer corps out of that. Meanwhile, the complexity of modern technology, the reach of modern media, means that this is the era of the "strategic corporal" on steroids.

Just make it the Canadian Sandhurst. ROTP in civilian schools. Summer program at RMC for officership. Rest of the school year send DEOs through.

Honestly though, I genuinely feel sorry for the staff at RMC. So much shit happens at civilian universities, sometimes with CAF members on ROTP or as reservists, but there's no scrutiny, because it's not strictly a military institution. I feel the scrutiny went criticism is disproportionate on RMC. But I just don't know if that will ever end.
Preach... RMC Staff are basically University Residence Don's who are under extreme amounts of scrutiny for every little detail.

I had to testify as a witness in court over an alleged incident that happened at the College and made this point, and how unrealistic it is. I was actually on deployment at the time and testified via satellite video link.

I said, "Your honour, I'm a soldier, my job is to assist these young adults to try to become soldiers/officers who may potentially have to fight in a war if needed. I'm not a guidance counselor, legal expert, mental health professional or behavioral psychologist. The fact that seems to be the expectation of some people, really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me and I don't believe it's grounded in any sort of actual reality".

They actually had a laugh over it and thanked me for my candor and honesty.

All university students were once high school students. It's what you select and what you do with that product that matters.

I doubt if the arts major has any greater grasp on technology than how to use MS Office. There are some university programs which are of value to the military and there are even some humanity courses that help produce a more rounded individual. That's what a well directed civilian ROTP program can produce. I just don't think that the artificial environment that is RMC has any great advantage.

Officership isn't that difficult that it needs years to develop. I always that that 11 months of OCTP - 3 months basic 8 months arty officer - was enough.
I don’t love losing 4 years of productive time for officers at the beginning of their careers, when they are the most energetic and idealistic.

Also, limiting our pool of officer applicants to those with university degrees (or enroute to degrees) is elitist and potentially excludes entire demographics (first nations, for example) from even applying.

Let’s figure out who has leadership potential before we waste time and money educating them.
This is where my head is at. Take them while young - teach them their job - let them spend time in their units where you can really evaluate what their potential is. You can then go in branches - let the poor ones finish their short service commission and wish them the best in their future endeavours elsewhere - take the yeoman hard workers and let them progress onward - and take the streamers and give them further more broadening education and employment.

Stop enrolments with parental consent; stop running a third rate set of universities that produce graduates without life skills to be adults.
I'm not convinced the public universities and colleges are producing viable adults either, but perhaps the DND shouldn't be trying to compete with them.

The crap we see with 'homecoming' at places like Queen's, Western and Guelph makes you wonder.

The university our daughter attended used to have a basic literacy test for new students but decided that's the public education system's job and it was up to the students to achieve the university's academic standards.
