I was hoping to tackle this as a discussion. It has come up many times, and in the media world there are media outlets who have called this out. Including media/commentary outlets like the Hub and Blacklocks (hardly right wing).
Does funding media/journalism (beyond ad pruchase) affect objectivity of their reporting?
Many of you know, I am a card carrying Conservative and at this time, I still by Pierre. There, my biases are open and transparent.
The Hub had this to say "The Canadian government does not do more to support Canadian media because of ongoing debates over the impact of state funding. Critics and independent outlets argue that subsidizing legacy media distorts the free market, hinders innovation, and threatens journalistic independence, while also fueling a decline in public trust."
I used some Google AI to do some quick digging into this
"Despite these criticisms, the Canadian government has heavily intervened in recent years to support the sector. Major initiatives include: "
The Online News Act (Bill C-18): Requires major tech platforms like Google to reach agreements and contribute financially to Canadian news organizations.
Journalism Labour Tax Credits: Subsidizes the salaries of eligible Canadian journalists.
The Online Streaming Act (Bill C-11): Updates the Broadcasting Act to force foreign streaming giants to contribute to the creation and availability of Canadian content.
Canada Media Fund: Invests hundreds of millions of dollars annually into the production of Canadian film and television content.
Direct Funding: Provides substantial operational funding to the public broadcaster, the CBC/Radio-Canada.
Industry groups and publishers continue to lobby for the government to shift more of its massive digital ad spending to Canadian-owned media, rather than allowing most of those advertising dollars to flow offshore to foreign platforms.
My personal views is yes, media objectivity is definitely affected.
