DGLRes keeps an open door to Army Reservists

Brigadier-General Dennis Tabbenor, Director General Land Reserve, invites you to attend the second live web town hall on December 7 from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm EST. Two subject matter experts will be joining the conversation to discuss individual training and operations.

In order to participate you must first register to the discussion forum on the Army website www.army.gc.ca, in the Your Voice section. Once you’re registered, you can begin to submit your questions.

The following is an excerpt from an interview between BGen Tabbenor and Josée Houde and Ben Myers, who produce the Army New Podcast. The full interview is available on the Army website.

Josée Houde: Sir, what is the purpose of these town halls?

BGen Tabbenor: I think the purpose of the town hall is to allow the soldiers out there who like to be online to have the opportunity to talk to myself as a senior Army Reservist on issues that are of concern to them as Reservists. Some people are not necessarily comfortable with asking these questions to their chain of command and the Internet town hall is sort of a way of allowing them to ask their questions without putting themselves out there…

Josée Houde: Who will benefit from these town halls?

Bgen Tabbenor : I think there are a number of people who will benefit. First of all, I benefit because I get a good idea of what is bothering soldiers out there or what questions they have. If I can locate a trend, I can then go down through the Army chain of command and say “Ok, we haven’t been good at answering this question, perhaps we can provide more information to the soldiers.” On the other side, I think the soldiers who are asking the question and who are listening benefit as well because it provides them a greater depth of knowledge of the Army and the Army Reserve and where they fit within it. So I think everybody benefits.

Josée Houde is an editor with Army News.

Is this being disseminated through the Chain of Command?  The last one certainly wasn't publicised in any effective way.

Unfortunatly, we only had a few days notice with the last one, but the General seemed very pleased with how it went and will likely do more.  To answer you question, I don't know, but I will find out and report back.

Why would the General pick a thursday Night ? I know that in BC every unit parades Thursday night except for 5th Field.

I did prefer the monday night like last time.

I assume that most units back east do parade on a Thursday night as well?

Tim, I strongly suggest that Gen T have someone ( very high up in the food chain who can give straight answers, not runarounds) from the CFPMP. Gen T knows the issues, and was twice questioned on the subject last time. As we get closer to the elusive CIF date, Reserve pers want concrete answers.

Hello

BGen Tabbernor originally chose Monday nights for his web town halls, knowing that most units parade on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights. Due to his current travel schedule, the upcoming forum will be held on a Thursday night.

Candian Forces Pension Modernization Plan.

Similar to tease the soldier plan, sorry I mean Clothe the Soldier Plan

Coming Into Force (Start of the Pension Plan)

Very good charlesm!!
I equate the CFPMP to the Gun Registry, the DND Gun Registry. It goes on forever, doesn't meet its targets, and costs a bundle. Except in DNDs case its not taxpayers, but Reservists who will pay through the nose.

CFSA has a 15.6 Billion surplus now. But: The Canadian Forces Superannuation Act (CFSA), was most recently amended by Bill C-78, which came into force on 1 April 2000.
Management of the Surplus: Previous legislation contained no provision for dealing with surpluses in the Superannuation Account. The current surplus will be retired over a period of up to 15 years, and the legislation provides a means of properly managing future surpluses.

Hello

There will now be a total of five subject matter experts on line 7 December with BGen Tabbernor to discuss operations and training issues related to Army Reservists. BGen Tabbernor will be joined by two members from the Directorate of Army Training in Kingston, two members from the Combat Training Centre in Gagetown and a member from the Directorate Land Readiness in Ottawa who recently returned from an Afghanistan deployment.

Come join the conversation 7 December 18:30 to 20:00 EST. Details available at www.army.gc.ca.

Thanks Susan, great to hear he's got some highly educated & experienced troops with him....Last online forum, seem to get alot of I'll have to get back to you answers, as he wasn't aware?  Just an observation though....

I posted on the off-topic thread and got an answer back today. It has restored my faith in the system.

Cheers

BGen Tabbernor's idea was to use the first town hall to get a sense of what Reservists were interested in discussing and then bring in the subject matter experts to talk about it.

Hopefully, tonight will generate lots of conversations about operations and training.

We'll continue to collect people's questions and ideas for future town halls.

We are still refining our processes as we go. Do you have any suggestions for making these town halls even more useful, interesting, etc.?

Did you participate in the conversation? How can we serve Reservists better? draw more participants? improve the forums, etc. How about the timings? Is it too early to sign off for BC Reservists?

I am posting BGen Tabbernor's sign off message from last night to let you now about the next forum which is slated for Monday, 22 Jan. We will begin collecting questions, comments in the next several days.

I have enjoyed reading your questions tonight and I hope our answers to your questions have been useful. 22 January 2007, we will hold another town hall to discuss personnel issues with experts from the Army Staff. I will also endeavour to have a pension specialist available.

I wish you all a happy holiday season.

BGen DC Tabbernor - Director General Land Reserve

I attempted to participate in both forums.  I registered separately for both and received confirmation messages but was never able to log on using the link provided.

I know I've  put BGen Tabbernor on the spot in the past, but I think he's going too far to avoid me now.... ;D

If you provide me with the Username you picked, i'll verfiy your account for you....you can PM me if you like.

I think this is a fantastic internal communication medium.

I asked a question about HSS on 1-08, had it replied to during the forum.  1HSG commander subsequently sent a personal reply to my question via my CoC; very timely, accurate, and, I suspect, as detailed as possible given that the brique hasn't been finalized yet.

Kudos to all involved.
