"As the devout Hindu Rishi Sunak said in his Easter 2023 message, Christian values “are British values”. The national tradition of the rule of law – another official “British value” – springs from Christian ideas expressed as early as the eighth century that kings must be under God and the law.
"Religious tolerance likewise emerges from Christian thinking, decades before John Locke, as a consequence of the translation of the Bible into English. If every ordinary person could read the Bible and interpret it for themselves under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, thinkers in the early 17th century reasoned, then everyone must be allowed liberty of conscience – and this principle should be extended to people of all faiths, provided they be “peaceable” and not “malefactors”.
"Given that we owe Christianity for everything from spiritual solace and cultural glories to social progress – the abolition of slavery and the prohibition of child labour – we should not fear to teach its role in British life with confidence. We cannot hope to be treated with respect by newcomers unless we treat our own culture with self-respect."
