I'm looking for some good exercises to increase my lung capacity to assist me during my runs.  I experience a shortness of breath and pain in my chest while I am running, long before any of my muscles begin to tire.  I feel that it severely limits my performance.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated  ;D

i know this isn't the answer you're looking for but...run more, run, run, run.  you have to train specific. try changing the way you run, instead if running at the same pace on level ground, try sprints for a 100-200m every km.  running up and down steap hills is also good.  If your lungs are beat before your legs then your cardio is weeker than it should be.  cardio is very important in basic because the instuctors will push you harder physicaly than you'd push your self and the muscles will not be able to work if they can't get oxagen.  changing your cardio as much as possible will keep your heart and lungs guessing and force then to keep up (become stronger).  your can bike and swim, these are good alternatives every once and a while but you should run of the time.  train the way you fight and when you think you can't take another step keep going because thats what it all about.

true. But, we all knew what he meant, right?

Also, Tetseth, try swimming.
And...ah...those threads any help? Any help at all? You did look through them before posting this question, right?

Haha... yeah... I did...  ::)  *begin's reading them* ... sorry, I'm a new guy.  I did do a search on lung capacity before I posted this question, and I didn't find the answers I was looking for.

I would do more swimming, but I just don't have great access to a swimming pool.

It sounds like I just need to suffer and push through my runs, and do them more often.

I've played lacrosse for a number of years, so the type of running I'm used to is short, hard bursts (sprints I guess).  I have only recently begun training (about a month and a half) for the army, and I have switched over to long distance running.  Perhaps my body just needs to adjust to the new running style I guess.

I'll try to add some more hills to my run also, that shouldn't be hard where I live.  I also happen to have a punching bag, I'll spend more time with it now...

Thanks for the help.
