Government hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

I have long said that you could fund the CAF to 4 percent of GDP, but we would still lag behind in NATO and be much the same where we are.

It's never the money, it's politics. It's procedures. It's the pork-barreling in our defence spending that makes us a paper tiger in NATO.

My only hope in all of this for the CAF and the GoC, whatever the political stripe that may be, is that it will rouse them out of the "Peace Dividend" slumber. The world has been unstable since 1945. We have used geography, proximity, and association as a Defence Policy ever since. ICBMs don't care how close to the U.S. or how far from Russia/China we are.

Don't give us a dime more, but let us spend money on defence like it matters. The fact we follow the same rules for purchasing a fighter aircraft as we do for buying office furniture for a Service Canada office is disgraceful. Don't treat defense procurement as a stimulus package for Canadian Industry. There I said it.

We spend so much money, time, and effort trying to get that money to stay in Canada; be it by awarding contracts to companies with no capability to produce items without first "retooling" and"developing the production lines", or by hamstringing perfectly competent and competitive bidders by forcing the project to be made in St. Margaret de Poutain de Champignon, QC because the ruling government either lost the seat in the election, or won it with promises.

We spend so much money and staff hours jumping through TBS regulations that are great for other departments, but are terrible for defence procurement. Some items you have to sole source, because there are technologies and capabilities no one else makes. By doing the bid process, you get companies clamoring for a project they can't deliver on, but because they tick the bright boxes on the score sheet....

I truly and honestly belief we need to split from PSPC and legislate that its not beholden to TBS, only to the PBO/PCO. The guiding principles of this new Defence Procurement department should be "Off the shelf, from somewhere else" if there isn't an industry in Canada.

BOOTFORGEN has demonstrated how well we do when we are able to actually get what we need, instead of lining the pockets of a Canadian company that got lucky.

That, but with tanks, fighters, ships, weapons systems....

The AW149 is now the only entry in the British New Medium Helicopter program, after Airbus withdrew the H175M. Might be a good idea to tag in on that order if they do pick the AW149 and don't cancel the program, which might allow us to negotiate a better per unit price on AW101s.
I’d only consider the 149 if they entice us with P&WC engines. GE T700 should be on our ‘let’s not be beholden to the US)’ list.

It's developed from the AW139, which uses the PT6, so it should be possible.

Which means Canada should find better allies/friends...

If the best America can come up with is "it's our boot heel or the other guys boot heel" , Canada can maybe look elsewhere.

I think the current US administration's view of politics if far too short term, to the detriment of America and the rest of the world. The relationship between Canada and America is permanently damaged. Canada should be exercising every opportunity to engage with others.

Until a few weeks ago, I was pretty much on board with "buy American". America has shown it's true colours, and that means we should be pivoting away from America as fast as possible. Maybe MTP, and Sky Sabre are the right Canadian options...
but not towards China, even for a toothbrush. There are over 6 billion potential customers for Canadian products in this world. Exclude China and the U.S. and you have almost 4 billion. Time to start brushing up on our collective sales pitch. The downside, the army won't get their Abrams

Meanwhile, in Texas...

In rural West Texas, a measles outbreak grows with no end in sight

At least 49 cases have been confirmed. Health officials — who are scrambling to get a handle on the vaccine-preventable outbreak — suspect 200 to 300 people may be infected.

Unfortunately we have to deal with these around the Waterloo area from time to time as well. A certain group of farming folks in typically flares up in.

Not wrong.
And the current administration is willfully and deliberately destroying the capacity of the federal government to address it.

Residents of the US already have shorter life expectancy than residents of Canada. This will make it worse.

While we are at it, if we wanna add capabilities, why not the AW249 attack helicopter? Say 4 squadrons?

There are no better allies or friends. Stop looking for them. We need to create our own hedgehog (or this being Canada, porcupine).

I agree.

Unfortunately, the political world has bled into sports once again.
Canadians traditionally have been quiet and somewhat reserved about expressing themselves. Many, in fact, have seemed almost embarrassed to sing the national anthem and prefer to stay silent. Now, because of what Trump and his lackey Congressmen have done, Canadians are doing the unthinkable…booing the national anthem of what they thought was their best friend and proudly singing their own national anthem. Unfortunately it may take this booing by the average Canadian to make Americans wake up and realize that we, as a nation, as a people, are very very angry about what America is doing to us. In just a very short timeframe, America has torpedoed our relationship and our trust. So I say let the booing continue, along with our tariffs on their products, buying Canadian, easing interprovincial trade barriers and looking seriously for other export opportunities, including building the infrastructure for shipping our petroleum products overseas. Also I say reconsider whether being in NORAD is really in our best interests as the Americans claim. In other words, f**k them.

Which is why I love professional baseball. Leave the political BS out of the game. Let the players statistics speak for themselves.

Till a Marine flies another country’s flag upside down during the World Series…🤦‍♂️

And we just bought switchblade 300 and 600

And we just bought switchblade 300 and 600

We spent 67$ million in total.
I’d like to know what that works out to be in terms of numbers, training, maintenance, storage, etc, etc.
Is this 5,000 Switchblade 300 & 600’s or 500 of them.

I hope we stay looking at joining more joint programs. Keep the F-35 buy. But join GCAP for 2040+ delivery and growth in the fighter fleet. I'm sure there's other joint projects we could do with the Koreans, Japanese and Europeans. Plenty will be spinning up going forward. After 4 years of this, nobody will be able to fully trust the Americans again. Personally, would not be surprised if countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Poland start considering their own deterrents. After all, can the Americans even be trusted to act in their own national interests?
