Government hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

Something coming tomorrow

Something coming tomorrow

even more Carl Gustafs?

all this talk of 5% and 3.5% plus 1.5% has got to be causing some consternation in Ottawa

I expect to be underwhelmed
I will be completely whelmed if we hit 2% and overwhelmed of we hit 2.5%. 5% is honestly fucking insane for advanced democracies who have to pay for healthcare systems and the like. Thr only way I see it happening is if they open up the formula to allow for more creative accounting. A NATO at 2.75% defence spending dominates anyone else globally and then some.

well 1.5% is for associated spending so 3.5%. But insane in peacetime with no clear threat to direct it against. China? Doesnt seem to relevant to NATO

Five percent is three points five percent military plus one point five percent military adjacent. In the latter, things like CCG and northern roads would be considered as part of it.
Regardless, 3.5% is also nutty, just less so than 5%. We aren't maintaining nuclear programs or massive carrier fleets here, and have more domestic responsibilities than the Americans do. Hell, they can't even afford 3.5% and are keeping it afloat by printing the global reserve currency, a luxury we don't have.

I think we can do 2.5% and being a G7 nation, with 3 oceans and the world longest coastline means we should be.

Misery loves company.

If everybody is doing it then nobody* is disadvantaged.

Examples

2008 Qualitative Easing
2020 Economy Shutdown
2025 Everybody borrows 5% from the same bank.

Anybody know any ex-bankers with experience in multi-national funding?

....

*except for the poor buggers living day to day.

The Prime Minister will meet Mark Carney, his Canadian counterpart, on June 14 for discussions concerning security and economic co-operation, according to The Times.

G7 15 - 17 June.

He's getting an early flight. There's always one or two who show up early to have a day before meeting with the host leader. Sometimes there's a legitimate reason, sometimes it just plays well with the hometown crowd to have that additional publicity bump. Especially if you're not doing too well in the polls back home.

And we have the same King that Trump covets.

News outlets are saying that Carney’s today in Toronto at 10am is to announce that Canada will meet 2% NATO threshold this fiscal year……
I find it interesting that he’s doing it Toronto. I’d think that if we were announcing the sub purchase he’d be in Halifax or the west coast. If it was for French or Swedish fighters he’d be in Montreal or Winnipeg. Gotta wonder why do it in Toronto.

Globe and Mail is reporting this now.
