I’m going to say that we are replacing all the tents, sleeping bags and night vision equipment that we have the Ukkies 2yrs ago. What's the over/under on us getting 2% finally.![]()
I will be completely whelmed if we hit 2% and overwhelmed of we hit 2.5%. 5% is honestly fucking insane for advanced democracies who have to pay for healthcare systems and the like. Thr only way I see it happening is if they open up the formula to allow for more creative accounting. A NATO at 2.75% defence spending dominates anyone else globally and then some.all this talk of 5% and 3.5% plus 1.5% has got to be causing some consternation in Ottawa
I expect to be underwhelmed
well 1.5% is for associated spending so 3.5%. But insane in peacetime with no clear threat to direct it against. China? Doesnt seem to relevant to NATOI will be completely whelmed if we hit 2% and overwhelmed of we hit 2.5%. 5% is honestly fucking insane for advanced democracies who have to pay for healthcare systems and the like. Regardless, 3.5% is also nutty, just less so than 5%. We aren't maintaining nuclear programs or massive carrier fleets here, and have more domestic responsibilities than the Americans do. Hell, they can't even afford 3.5% and are keeping it afloat by printing the global reserve currency, a luxury we don't have.Five percent is three points five percent military plus one point five percent military adjacent. In the latter, things like CCG and northern roads would be considered as part of it.
I think we can do 2.5% and being a G7 nation, with 3 oceans and the world longest coastline means we should be.Regardless, 3.5% is also nutty, just less so than 5%. I agree. 2.5 is a good goal.I think we can do 2.5% and being a G7 nation, with 3 oceans and the world longest coastline means we should be.

News outlets are saying that Carney’s today in Toronto at 10am is to announce that Canada will meet 2% NATO threshold this fiscal year……
I find it interesting that he’s doing it Toronto. I’d think that if we were announcing the sub purchase he’d be in Halifax or the west coast. If it was for French or Swedish fighters he’d be in Montreal or Winnipeg. Gotta wonder why do it in Toronto.

If this is a "We're hosting G7, and here's how we're spending Defence dollars" announcement, that makes sense.Toronto is our financial capital.![]()
